Much like the lead-up to the eventual retirements of Jordan, Iverson, and the late, great Kobe Bryant, fans and analysts are now speculating about the reasons why, how, and when LeBron James may hang up his jersey. With some help from Polymarket, we have reviewed whether this is likely ahead of the 2027 NBA season.
There is no doubt that LeBron has been a staple of prediction markets over the years, but we are now at a point where we are focused on retirement alongside potential MVP status.
Based on our recent review of Polymarket, analysts believe that it is unlikely for LeBron to retire before the 2027 season, and the markets have dropped from around 35% to 13% since early February.
| LeBron’s future | Retirement before the 2027 NBA season | No retirement for LeBron ahead of the 2027 NBA season |
|---|---|---|
| Chance | 13% | 87% |
| Yes | $0.18 | $0.92 |
| No | $0.92 | $0.18 |
Although a relatively small 13% chance is predicted, retirement prior to the 2027 season is still very much possible. For starters, let us begin with age. There is no dispute that LeBron can still perform at the highest level; however, at 41, the physical demands of the sport will have a much greater impact.
This isn’t just about clear injuries; we are talking about general fatigue from gameplay, extensive hours of travel, and (if he sticks with the Lakers or another Championship hopeful) the season can extend far beyond the hectic 82-game regular season. Even for someone of Lebron’s condition and with access to the best resources, this is something to seriously consider.
There is also the legacy factor. Most players put off retirement because they have yet to reach the dizzying heights that LeBron has already achieved. LeBron is the league’s all-time leading scorer, a 4x NBA Champion, 4x finalist MVP, 4x regular season MVP, and an Olympic Gold Medal winner – is there much more he wants to win?
We don’t think greed comes into it at all, but there are obviously contracts, deals, merch, and all sorts of sponsorships that we suspect could keep LeBron around. Besides these obvious reasons, you also have to consider the competitive nature of the league’s all-time leading scorer and the fact that he is still putting numbers on the board.
The 25-26 season was LeBron’s 23rd season in the NBA. Still, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists – besting rising stars, new recruits, and established names throughout the league.
Clearly, LeBron is not washed or done, like many who have tried to do “just one more” season. Instead, he still looks (relatively) fresh and has even been noted to be hinting at one more NBA Championship. Whether that is with the Lakers or another team is yet TBC, but it does lead towards another season, unless LA turns things around against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In short, yes. Unlike other NBA prediction markets, like MVPs and Coach of the Year markets, you’ll find that retirement is as much about contracts as it is personal choice. We don’t wish to jinx things, but injuries are much harder to recover from at this stage of your career, and this is the most likely reason for an early retirement to occur.
Naturally, we will be the first to bring you any breaking news that could affect the latest markets, but you can also keep an ear to the ground to help better predict your own entry and exits.
Over at Polymarket, you will see that the probability of a LeBron retirement has significantly dropped over recent months. From December to mid-February, we saw a rough probability of 20-35%. However, as we edge towards April and May, we find ourselves around the 13-18% mark.
With all of this taken into account, we have to say that we agree with the latest trends. We find it difficult to see why LeBron would consider retiring ahead of the 2027 season, unless a serious injury or other significant event were to occur.
While LeBron still features heavily in the Lakers’ line-up, retirement feels some distance away. The numbers don’t lie, and with averages of 24 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8 assists, we suspect the Lakers – or another Championship contender – will do all they can to keep one of the GOATs around.
