Sebastian Giovinco Continues To Tear Up MLS
Sebastian Giovinco scored a pair of goals and assisted another today as Toronto FC beat the Colorado Rapids 3-1. Both scores were fairly simple for Giovinco, on account of the massive gaps defenders left him, but he got himself to the right spot with ease each time. He continues to be at the center of everything Toronto does, marginalizing USMNT stars Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore in the process.
No MLSer has ever reached 20 goals and 15 assists in the same season, but the Italian could soon become the first, as he is currently sitting one shy in each category at 19 and 14. Toronto is a cut below the Eastern Conference’s elite teams, but Giovinco’s game-breaking ability means they’re always dangerous.
As risky as it is to rely on one player to do the creative heavy lifting, Giovinco’s unmatched ability to flay defenses with his dribbling and tight running necessitates that Toronto run most everything through him. Simply put, he does things no other MLS attacking midfielder (save Kaká on a good day) can do and that makes defending Toronto that much more difficult.
And so, even though TFC is currently scrapping to avoid a wild card slot, Giovinco should get the MVP award. Kei Kamara is a nice player who fits in perfectly to e very attractive Colombus team. The Benny Feilhaber renaissance has been really fun this year. Hell, Dax McCarty is resplendent as MLS’ top redhead and the New York Red Bulls’ engine. All of those players’ teams are better, but it’s not close.
