What we watched: I'm back home for the weekend visiting the family. So, naturally, what I watched involved flipping between NCIS reruns and Game 5 of the 2001 World Series, a Yankees Classic™. What a game. Scott Brosius tied the game in the home half of the ninth to send Yankee fans, Michael Kay and John Sterling into hysterics. I prefer Game 4, though.

Another pleasant valley [satur]day: "The NBA ownership group's labor committee will reopen talks with the players' side Saturday afternoon, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard, a meeting one general manager, who has spoken with a few owners, described as 'headed straight for disaster.'" Today in future Miami Dolphins bust news: "Matt Barkley. Sure the defense started three freshmen linebackers and played really well in the red zone (Colorado was in the red zone four times and had two field goals blocked) but this was Barkley's show. He dealt with some drops by his receivers - including a sure touchdown by Marqise Lee - but finished 26-for-40, 329 yards, an interception and a school-record with six touchdown passes in one game. The junior also moved into the top 10 on the active NCAA career touchdowns thrown list." [ CBS Sports]

Thome is back, sounds like a perfect option at DH: "As a free agent in 2003, Thome came to the Phillies as a first baseman and remained in that role before suffering a back injury that opened the door for Howard to take his job and become the National League rookie of the year in 2005. That offseason, former Phillies general manager Pat Gillick traded Thome to the Chicago White Sox for centerfielder and pitcher Gio Gonzalez.

Since then, Thome has played for the White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Twins, and Indians. What he has not done much is play anywhere in the field. He has logged a total of 28 innings at first base over the last six years, so it could be a stretch to think that he will spend much time at first base even if Howard cannot play during the first couple of months of the season."
