United States blanks Sweden to reach women's hockey gold medal game

Lee Stecklein of United States celebrates after the match MILAN, Italy -- The United States beat Sweden 5-0 in the women's ice hockey semifinals on Monday to reach the Winter Olympics gold medal game.
The two-time champions were the favorites heading into Milan in pursuit of their first gold medal since 2018. They put on another convincing performance at Santagiulia arena, where Cayla Barnes scored in the first period, while Taylor Heise, Abbey Murphy, veteran Kendall Coyne Schofield and Hayley Scamurra notched second-period goals.
The Americans will play the winner of the semifinal between defending Olympic champions Canada and Switzerland for the gold on Thursday.
Sweden, which won its last medal with the silver in 2006 when it upset the Americans, beat Czech Republic in the quarterfinals but ran out of firepower against the world champions.
