Mandatory Credit: Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports Utah announced Monday that longtime defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley will be the next head coach of the Utes when head coach Kyle Whittingham retires.
Athletic director Mark Harlan said the program entered into a new employment agreement with Scalley last November. Scalley is entering his 17th year as an assistant on Utah's staff and ninth as DC.
There is no timetable for Whittingham's retirement.
"Coach Whittingham and I both strongly believe that that future lies with Morgan Scalley," Harlan said in the school release. "Morgan has played a critical role in our success through his embodiment of our core values and his leadership, and I have witnessed firsthand his growth as a coach and as a person over the last several years. He is an elite coach who has been trained by the best -- Coach Whittingham -- and whenever it is time for Morgan to take the helm, I have no doubt that our program will continue to have success."
Scalley, 44, was an All-America safety at Utah from 2001-04 and began as an administrative assistant with the Utes in 2006.
Whittingham, 64, is entering his 20th season as head coach of the Utes and is 162-79.
