As you might have seen by now, the Mets really were "Rick Rolled" yesterday with the playing of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" at Shea Stadium. If they're going by crowd reaction to decided what the permanent winner is ... it doesn't looks good for Mr. Astley.
On a positive note, maybe the crowd tonight will be more welcoming to Mr. Astley. (They're supposedly running all the songs for the next five nights.) We might dress up as Mr. Astley at the game tonight just to serve the cause.
Seriously, though, Rick Astley aside: Can Mets fans please not pick "Sweet Caroline?"
Mets Get Rick Rolled [The 700 Level]

Comments
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the end. The end of the internets.
Shea stadium fans have never heard of the internet.
"We might dress up as Mr. Astley at the game tonight just to serve the cause."
Don't act like you haven't done that before, Will.
This look might be easier for you to pull off.

re: sweet caroline - word... and i live in medford mass. it's embarrassing.
Well, I guess someone really wanted the theme song from Friends.
@sinister midget: word - living in medford mass IS embarrassing...
re: sweet caroline - word... and i live in medford mass. it's embarrassing.
But how do you feel about the song?
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy.
@twoeightnine: Just comb the bangs up instead of down.
I see my solitary internet campaign of writing in "Spice Up Your Life" has been largely unsuccessful.
Slam it to the left, if ya feelin' the beat now!
Ah, Rick Astley: the British Potsie Weber.
/still grinning about yesterday
So is it safe to say that this song and Shea won't be together forever?
/showing self out early today
+1000 to whoever started this whole Rick Roll business.
Your work on this earth is complete. Rest now, my son.
@Doyle McPoyle:
I say it should be "Blitzkrieg Bop"
Rick Chandler > Rick Astley
I'm pretty sure that was Astley's only chance. They're playing a different song at each of the Mets' first five games.
This is ridiculous. Mets fans know the rules of 8th inning singalong voting contests, and so do I.
Was that video shot from the Air Traffic Control Tower at Laguardia?
they gotta step up their game at Shea this week. I fully expect to see a rumble between Rangers and Devils fans.
It also didn't help that this song was played almost immediately after the Mets assed away the game. So the crowd was not exactly feeling jolly.
How about, no singalong? How about, watching a baseball game you paid a lot of money to see? A crazy thought, I know.
Mets fan have let me down, unlike Mr. Astley.
At least show the music video, they will be won over by his awesome dance moves.
@UkraineNotWeak: That's actually a pretty good one.
And this song can't win. No song with the lyrics "never gonna give you up" should be allowed to play while the Mets bullpen is pitching.
I still maintain that if the Mets made a video for Rickroll with the players lip-syncing along and dancing, it would be a glorious hit.
/Gay For David Wright
Jeez, just play Dominick the Donkey so all the scumbini's stay in their seats for the 8th as they do in 7th for Lazy Mary.
If Rick can throw a strike or start a double play at first base I'll vote for him.
Rick should not be upset tho, atleast he's not Scott Schoenweis
Next song: "I Wanna Rock Your Body, Baby ('Til The Break of Dawn)," by Carl Brutananandilewski.
I think New York fans would be more into this one.
/wiggity-wiggity-wahhhhhh
If it was up to Omar Minaya it would be Julio Iglesias.
And Mets fans thought they were going to make the playoffs last year so I wouldn't count out the internet quite yet.
As a Phillies fan, may I suggest it be replaced with The Cranberries' Zombie?
In your head, in your heeeeee-ad
@Gourmet Spud: When did the Rick Astley resurgence start? The first time I remember hearing the song again was on an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The segment about it on I Love the 80s was good (Carlton Banks is a fan of the song), but that was just one of the many ridiculous segments of that episode.
What started the Rick Astley resurgence?
@Jefferson DArcy: the Italian Christmas Donkey??? Perfect!
+ Watch video
@EditorOfTheDailyFaberian: Your premise is faulty in its inherent assumption that Rick Astley ever went away to yet again be resurged.
With the Mets bullpen, a more logical 8th inning song would be "Give it away" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers don't you think?
@EditorOfTheDailyFaberian:
According to Wikipedia:
"The practice began as a variant of an earlier prank originating from the imageboard 4chan called duckrolling, in which a link to a popular celebrity or news item would instead lead to a photoshopped picture of a duck with wheels."
Mike Piazza doesn't mind this song at all...
I would have went with "Wake Me Up when September Ends,"
//weeps into hands.
@Civil Negligence: Seriously. I used to have a circa-1987 Rick Astley promo glossy hanging in my cube at my college newspaper.
Would anyone like to place a wager on how many times Chutley gets plunked tonight? The line is set at two, and I'm taking the over.
There is nothing quite like wating on a 20 minute line to use the bathroom, and hear the PA announcer say rickrolled. I asked the 15 yr old kid in front of me what that meant.
Newsday blamed Deadspin by the way.
[www.newsday.com]
Who is swinging by the BP station to break the news to Rick?
Not it.
The saddest part of Astley's prime was his repudiation of his hit sound when he tried to reinvent himself in the 'Cry For Help' era. Ridiculous -- 'Never Gonna Give You Up' was the best song of the 80s, except for 'Teenage Riot' by Sonic Youth. If only they'd collaborated....
The Mutts got J-Rolled.
In response, Dodger Stadium is holding "2girls1cup" night.
Isn't getting Rick Rolled a bad thing? You're expecting to click and getting something terrific and instead you get Rick Rolled.
I'd boo too.
@crazyjoedavola: clearly jacobfox2000 and bdbthinker are experts on this story
@The Diesel:
I got to get gas so I'll do it.
Shea stadium's final season opener had the crowd get rickrolled in the course of a 5-2 loss.
At least now they know what it's like to be a Philadelphia sports fan.
@shea_guevara: Being there, the crowd seemed to care more for booing guys in Phillies gear and cheering on in-stands fights than watching the game they paid a lot of money to see. Me and my scorecard, however, did not.
I'd much rather see Turk Wendell brush his teeth on the jumbotron for 3 minutes.
I prefer "Together Forever"
@kayceebk: There was a great fight in the seats behind the 3rd base dugout though. Usually don't see the people there throwing down. And thanks to Willie putting in Schoenweiss, that was all that was left.
In the book of Revelations, John speaks of seven angels sounding seven trumpets to mark the Apocalypse.
I always expected it to sound a bit more regal than this, though.
Will, If you're going to dress like him, you have to rock the all denim look. It's really the only way to go.
@BigRicks: Even over 'It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man', the midtempo follow-up single that seemed custom made for the burgeoning adult-contemporary format?
