Oy! Jets Schedule Conflicts With High Holidays
All that kvetching and gnashing of teeth you hear is because Jewish New York Jets fans may have to miss a quarter of their team's home games due to an NFL scheduling mixup.
The Jets claim that they asked the league to put them on the road during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the two holiest holidays in the Jewish calendar. But the message somehow didn't get through — perhaps they should have used two large stone tablets? — and now Jets fans of the Jewish persuasion have a big decision to make.
"The Jets are hearing from their fans," said Howard Katz, the NFL's senior VP of broadcasting, who oversees the creation of the schedule. "There was miscommunication between the Jets and the NFL office, for which I take full responsibility. All we can continue to do is look and see if there is a solution to this."
One would think that a month dedicated to introspection and repentance should include at least one Jets game, but apparently not. The Jets are scheduled to play the Patriots at 1 p.m. on Sept. 20. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is observed from sundown on Friday, Sept. 18 until sundown on Sunday, Sept. 20. Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement, begins at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Jets are home against the Titans that day at 4:15 p.m. I believe that is also throwback yalmaka day.
