Veteran MLB Umpire Brian Runge Fired For Violating League Drug Policy
MLB has fired 14-year veteran umpire Brian Runge for a violation of the league drug policy, according to the Associated Press. Runge is believed to be the first umpire punished under big league random drug testing protocols.
AP sources identified Runge as having failed a drug test, then having violated terms of his probation to remain on the big league umpiring roster. He had yet to call an MLB game this season, though he had called several AAA games. Runge was suspended by the league back in 2008 for bumping then-Mets manager Jerry Manuel during an argument.
Runge's dismissal brings to an end the Runge dynasty of MLB umpires that dates back to grandfather Ed's service as an American League ump from 1954-1970.
