After Photography Ban, Soccer Game Covered By Cartoonist
League One side Southampton banned all photographers from their stadium for this weekend's match. The visiting team's newspaper handled it well, reducing the comical situation to, well, a comic.
Southampton, in a plain and simple cash grab, tried to force media outlets to purchase game photos from the club's official photographer. That didn't sit well with the Plymouth Herald, covering the visiting Argyle, They apparently wanted to run their own photos, despite the fact that all English soccer photographers seem to be occupied with getting pictures of Wayne Rooney peeing on a golf course, and Wayne Rooney peeing in an alley.
So the Herald commissioned city historian Chris Robinson to draw the key moments from Saturday's season opener, including this, Luke Summerfield's game-winner:
The Sun, never one to pass up a stunt, ran "the most one-sided match report in their history," managing to report the game without once mentioning Southampton or any of the Saints players.
Newspapers have refused to purchase Southampton's photos, and their "official" agency has said they will no longer go along with the scheme. With the Saints heavily favored for promotion to the Championship this year, it'll be interesting to see how long they're willing to maintain a policy that depicts them as nothing so much as cartoonish misers.
