Canada Acknowledges That Its Hockey Is More Important Than Its PoliticsS

Canada has rescheduled a French federal election debate to accommodate the opening game of the Montreal-Boston game on Thursday. We admire the compromise: here in the states, we'd probably just have had to choose based on which event made for a better drinking game.

Gilles Duceppe, leader of the Bloc Québécois — Quebec's representation in the House of Commons of Canada — initially raised the concern and submitted a formal request that the French debate be bumped to Wednesday. "In the name of democracy," Duceppe wrote, "I ask you to add your voice to mine and contact the consortium as soon as possible." Hockey triumphs, and will stand alone on Thursday (unless curling has any say in it).

The lesson here, for our proud democracy: In Canada, they do not allow their sports and their politics to mix, because they know that if they did, nobody would bother to give a shit about the politics part.
