Sadistic Ulster Talk Show Host Made 9-Year-Old Rory McIlroy Chip Into An Unfairly Small Washing Machine
This look at the origins of our Ror(y)gasm comes via Devil Ball Golf:
Apparently McIlroy used to practice his chipping by hitting balls in his parents' house and aiming at the washing machine. This was on something called "The Kelly Show," and host Gerry Kelly had a prescient quote: "The Americans have Tiger Woods. We have young Rory and, believe you me, this boy can hit a ball."
Of course, this washing machine is tiny, especially for 1999, when this episode of Kelly was broadcast. With its small drum, sharp lines, and beige exterior, it looks like an early-80s Price Is Right showcase prize. Poor Rory. It appears he didn't even get to keep the washer.
