Strange as it might seem, there's a clear reason for Pirates fans to cheer against the Golden State Warriors tonight as they reach for the final playoff spot and clinch a winning record. The Pirates, with a Warriors win, will be even more alone in their misery. From an astute reader:
Folks who will have perhaps-unexpected interest in tonight's Golden State-Portland game: Pittsburgh Pirates fans. The Bucs have compiled 14 losing seasons — and counting. The Warriors stand at 12 — meaning at least that the Pirates have a friend in the double digits. Should GS win tonight, the next closest on the list are the Orioles (nine straight losing seasons), the Devil Rays (all nine of their seasons) and — yes — your Buzzsaw (eight).
It's lonely at the bottom, so if Pirates fans suddenly love the Trail Blazers tonight, you'll know why.

I love to look at baby pictures of Johnny Depp.
I love how the Pirates-bash always follows our rare wins over the Cards. Vive les Bucs!
As the old saying goes, misery loves Gorzelanny.
But I don't wanna be a pirate!!
The weird thing is, that's the kid's actual hair.
yah, but we're #1 in zombie flicks and people mispronouncing the word "kielbasa"
@Weed Against Speed: I want to sing and dance, I want to sing and dance, I want to be a pirate in the Pirates of Penzance.
No wonder he's upset. That's not an eye patch, it's Al Davis' thong!
Why do I get a 1993-Giants/Braves race-Solomon Torres feeling about tonight? Oh right, because it's the Warriors.
Go ahead, Warriors, break my heart again.
And the fact that the Pirates now have the best road record in MLB at the moment?
Off to look at pics of Nady again...
Feh. I'm going to root for Golden State!
I want to keep piling the misery on the plates of Kevin McClatchy and Ogden Nutting so high, they fucking choke on it all.
But I'm not bitter.
@Lady Andrea:
Uh-oh. Show tunes.
"Folks who will have perhaps-unexpected interest in tonight's Golden State-Portland game: Golden State fans."
That pirate look is really catching on.
I see no reason for Warrior and Pirate fans to ARRRRRRRGGGGue.
Somewhere, the faint sounds of Sid Bream laughing can be heard.
@Weed Against Speed: actually, it's The Pirate Song by Ray Stevens.
@Big Daddy Drew: you arrrr! one of me favorite commenters.
@Lady Andrea:
So much the better...
We will always have "Bring your dog to the park" nights to look forward to...
I was watching a movie with Peter SARRRRsgARRRRRD the other day...
It hard to be a fan of the PittsbARRGH Pirates!
@Jerkwheat: What is your favorite fast food restaurant that serves Roast Beef?
What's a Pirate's favorite Thursday night hospital drama?
@Lady Andrea: Ray Stevens? You are the princess of obscure pop culture references.
What's the rating for the new Pirate movie?
What's your favorite poison?
@Seabass: Is it ERRRRRRRRR?
Just wait a year and the O's and Devil Rays will take the Warriors place. They will always be busy making misery.
Next years Pirate convention will be held in Boston. So they parrrrrrrk the carrrrrrr at the harrrrrrrvarrrrrd yarrrrrrrd.
Not rooting for pirates: Ninjas.
@Sid Bream Was Out: I'm so hungry I could eat at ARRRRRRRRRby's!
@Seabass:
Scrubs?
Wait, no, that's the Pirate roster.
On another note, how come there isn't a "walk the 84 Lumber plank" promotion?
PS. I'm sick of seeing pictures of crying Pirates fans. You've seen one, you've seen 'em ARRRRRRRRRRGGGG.
I hope Adam LaRRRRRRRRRRoche breaks out of his slump soon
@Jerkwheat: I hope he doesn't. I dropped him right before he hit that shot last night and picked up 3 ARRRRRRRRGGG.B.I.
Also, the kid in that picture looks about 6. Wouldn't that have been better use in the Australian football post?
heh heh.
I am actually a Pirates and a Buzzsaw fan. Maybe these teams don't really suck, maybe I just suck as a fan.
Stupid fucking McClatchy should get his finger out of his ARRRRRRRRSE.
@Lady Andrea: Fucking phenomenal.
Ahh yes, thank you Tigers for getting us off that ship last year.
We Pirate fans will root for the Blazers just because Darius Miles is a 'Burgh kind of guy.
Will-
You know that feeling you had back in October? As a Pirate fan, I've been fortunate enough to experience it -- twice. Yes, it's been a long decade and a half, but there's plenty to be proud of (except perhaps the aforementioned inability of Bonds to throw out Sid FUCKING Breem).
BTW, my grandfather, a native of Chicago, lived his entrie life without ever seeing his Cubs win the series.
Go Bucs! Nice sweep of the Cards (if you can call winning a two game series a sweep).
@BurghGirl: We're going to 'em !!! I'll bring the dog and the bitch.
@Dread: Excellent question.
when is the dog park night?
Maybe we can have a deadspin pooch party
Baseball Furies hunkered down near the Golden Triangle. Warriors got to get back to loserville. Yinz Cardinals are a sorry lot right about now an 'nat.
