I didn't know it at the time, but after I finished that article- I waved goodbye to a little part of my childhood, and waved hello to a world where things weren't so simple.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the road games, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Sports could have used a strong leader at that time. Looked how many lives were saved when Kenesaw Mountain Landis took a strong stance against radium enemas.

"I guess I can tell this story now, one of my great experiences when I was a young player. Don Wilson was all 'roided up and pitching a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves. They had a juiced-up Orlando Cepeda, a tweaked Rico Carty, Felipe Alou on uppers and Hank Aaron, of course. And they got to the ninth inning, he got two outs, no one on base, and Hank Aaron was the hitter. And in my infinite wisdom, I ran in to the mound. I said, "You know, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if Hank Aaron took PEDs. He said, "Get back to second base." I proceeded to go back to second base. He threw three fastballs right by Hank Aaron. No-hitter."

We don't have any regulations on drugs, alcoholic beverages or anything.

It used to drive Howard Grubbs crazy when Bear Bryant would constantly refer to him as "Mr. Grubby".

Why would our players need drugs? They get all the enhancement they need from smoking delicious Chesterfields!
