None of my teams have even been to their respective finals. No wonder I drink and gamble.

None of your teams were around when Nixon resigned either.

Over = 6 consecutive bowled balls.
Innings = An entire batting team's turn to bat. In forms of cricket in which the number of overs is not limited (e.g. test cricket), this continues until all players on the batting team are out. In limited-overs cricket, a team's innings can also end when the maximum number of overs have been bowled. I believe that, in test cricket, each team gets two innings, and the team with the most runs after that wins.

How would someone like me get into betting ponies or greyhounds? Where can I get a fairly pain-free baseline education?

There is quite a lot that goes into horses. You have to know stuff like how they worked out the days before, their jockey, their starting position, their pedigree, the other horses in the race and how that would effect how that certain horse runs. The Daily Racing Form ([www.drf.com]) gives you a TON of information day to day on each horse's workouts and stuff like that.
As far as bets go you can look that stuff up on almost any betting site. A couple good standard bets would be to find a horse you like and bet 2 dollars to Win, Place, Show (6 dollars total, call "Bet Horse X across the board"), which means you would hit all three bets if the horse wins, the place and show bets if it comes in second, etc. Another good bet would be a 2 dollar EXACTA BOX bet on 2 horses you like (4 dollars). These horses would have to finish first and second, in either order (BOX means that).
That's the basic run-down I can give you right now considering I've had quite a few tonight. If you have any more questions just PM me, I'll be more than happy to help.
/HUGE dick joke.

I need to find a local track and then learn to read the paper on it, and I will hit new lows in my depravity.

I'm not saying he should be the unquestioned #1, but if the Wizards do land the top spot he'd be the best pick for us.

I've watched a lot of college ball this year and his game just looks the most NBA-ready to me.

Give me Jeff Teague in the 10-17 range; he's a Monta Ellis-Chris Paul hybrid.

Do you take Griffin and chance that he's going to replicate college success? Do you take Ricky Rubio and hope he doesn't Telfair it for a couple of years? Do you take Thabeet and hope he learns how to play offense?
