@Token_Tennis_Fan: Because if my school is going to win some trip to Uganda by raising a shitton of money I'd like to be sure that 80% of it is going to Ugandan schools and not to operating expenses, as it appears from their tax exemption forms.
Hey, DUAN. Do any of you fine folks know the best way to go about investigating a "charity"? My school has become heavily involved in one and just from perusing their 990 forms, it appears that they raised 7 million last year but spent only 2.5 million on the actual projects.
@thejuiceisloose: They did. About 1 million went to salaries (with 300,000 going to management, which seemed high. Generally charities spend less than 10 percent on management costs). Another 700,000 went to producing the film that describes the charity (its Hollywood glitzy and sucked my school in). 200,000 to rent costs, another million for assorted costs. What was interesting, however, was that 1.5 million was spent was what was labeled (buried on page 45) as the "Uganda Program". This seems to imply that it went to Uganda (where the charitable stuff is based), but for the government's purposes, it was listed separately from the 2 million spent directly. Where did that money go? To pay bribes?
@chilltown: I wouldn't doubt its bribes. Definitely interesting to break it out though. Most of the 501(c)(3) organizations need audits, so its likely that information is audited. The biggest thing you can do if you have any control over contributing to the charity is make the donation restricted or temporarily restricted. That way they have to use the money for the specific purpose you intend, which is helpful if the school made a huge donation. The bigger the donor you could also request to see the audited financial statements and footnotes along with the auditors report, lots of interesting things end up in there. (I have been auditing non-profits all summer, not a glorious thing to do)
@thejuiceisloose: Good point. I've just started looking at the Financial statements (the annual reports don't square up at all with the 990s, which is suspicious). The link is here if anyone is interested. [www.invisiblechildren.com]
@She Blinded Me With Violence: even more appropriate had the game been in Mt Pleasant, home of the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort (where I worked my way through college...)
@UkraineNotWeak aka Praying for a Bullpen: my best friend from college is moving in with boy wonder and i next week. vegas will have NOTHING on the craziness that will ensue here.
@The Boy Wonder: well that was Brian Kelly at the helm. (and the first ever appearance of LeFevour after BC knocked out the first two QBs...)
I haven't been real enamored with Butch Jones, in spite of a 14-1 record in conference play. But with the level of talent on that team right now, that should be the record in conference games. However, that's the first time this year I've watched them and seen him play it meekly so I'm not gonna protest too much.
@Jerkwheat: I remember knocking out the 2 QBs and feeling pretty safe...the LeFevour came in and did his thing.
Ultimately, a win is a win. Maybe its because I'm not used to having a kicker you can have faith in, but 3 straight runs after an INT looks like a "playing to not lose" to me (another thing BC is used to)
@Token_Tennis_Fan: Well, what soured me on him last year was A)Getting blown out at home by North Dakota State and B)Not bothering to show up at all for any of the BCS opponents and C)losing to Eastern.
Not that I was expecting to win any of those BCS opponent games, but losing to Clemson 70-17 was beyond shameful. Fucking Mike DeBord's teams didn't usually get beaten like that.
@Jerkwheat: We had 7 home games that year. Our out of conference included CMU, BYU, Maine, and Buffalo. CMU at the beginning of the year was stellar compared to the alternatives.
@Jerkwheat: For a guy who never played in college before he seemed to handle himself pretty well. It does feel like he's been around for ever. Some guys seem like they were just a blip in college, other ones feel like they're 8th year seniors working on their 7th year of eligibility.
@The Boy Wonder: well, if they make the Motor City Bowl again, I'm hopeful I can finally go see him run the offense in person. Assuming I'm still able to go see family in MI over Christmas that is.
@Token_Tennis_Fan: I don't know that he has the rep that ROFLsberger or the other MAC QBs that got drafted high had going into the draft. I worry he might get the small college system QB tag and wouldn't be drafted high enough to really justify it. But, injuries this year might make him consider it more though.
@Jerkwheat: I've seen him play in person a couple times and know he's the real deal... can't imagine scouts have missed him. We know everyone will be watching him and Davis next week. Take the over.
@Token_Tennis_Fan: oh I think he's got their attention, and CMU has had a lot of tv exposure the past two seasons as well thanks to their recent success. I don't think any scouts have missed him, I just think it's been the more classic dropback guys who seem to get the early entry attention, especially at the mid-major level. LeFevour has good size though, a strong enough arm, and great mobility. He should be a first day pickup either this spring or next.
However, if he outduels Davis and they win out, then I'd expect him to go. He's a redshirt junior anyway. Might already be graduating this spring.
Unless they are also providing hookers at the open bar, I dont see that as possible.
I'm still going to give it my best effort; my $350 ticket is discounted because I'm a recent alum. Normal tickets start at $750, I believe. There should be some solid liquor there, for sure.
Note to self: food is useful. Remember to have some tomorrow.
Tomorrow's going to be a rough day. At my college's spring benefit, I tried to get my money's worth from the open bar on a $150 ticket. Tomorrow night's ticket was $350; odds on me throwing up in an alley are pretty good.
@thejuiceisloose: My company is enjoying the difficult economic times. They already sent out the memo that basically told us not to expect any bonuses and are doubling workloads. Good times.
@J-No: yeah, as an accountant, I'd say thats about par for the area. Our firm is primarily Jewish, our Christmas bonus was a crisp $100 bill so we are used to no bonus.
Your avitar wins this round, still no loss in regulation at home, but we are on the penalty kill in OT
