@MarkKelsosMigraine: I'm stuck in Dulles with time running out on my paid internet, so I don't feel like putting together a lengthy rebuttal. Suffice it to say that I completely disagree. We can discuss later, in less hectic climes, if you wish.
@Sheed's Bald Spot: We should. But I'll just say that I like the guy and think he's funny. But this is a team game -- 53 guys will go out with #15 on the back of their helmets. And for him to try to individualize his grief in a way that sets him apart from his teammates is insulting.
@MarkKelsosMigraine: Not if Henry was a close friend of his it wouldn't be. For example, the Redskins players endorsed Clinton Portis wearing Sean Taylor's T-Shirt under his jersey after he passed (although it wasn't visible). You don't know what's going on in that locker room and shouldn't pretend you do - and the self-righteous indignation is reserved for ESPN message boards.
@FavreFAIL: And you are absolutely right. We don't know what went on in that locker room. What if they were not close and this is another attempt at self-promotion?
@MarkKelsosMigraine: I suspect other Bengals players or the Henry family would have said something if they objected to it that much. Ocho was definitely one of Henry's closest friends in the Bengals locker room. I'm not sure why you'd assume it was just self-promotion, given that Ocho has never been the type of guy to promote himself at the expense of others. It takes a special kind of messed up to exploit a teammate's death like you're implying, which I don't think is fair.
@MarkKelsosMigraine: And it was you who said "Wearing the guy's jersey (before he is even buried) is not a 'sweet gesture' but an act of self-congratulatory exhibitionism" - that's a way bigger generalization than anything Barry wrote.
@FavreFAIL: Fair enough. I don't doubt the sincerity of people who tattoo their deceased family members on their arms, but I don't think that is appropriate either. Wow, maybe I am more traditional than I think. That's scary. Sometimes the appropriate response to tragedy is silence, not advertising your own feelings.
And for the record, I agree that the righteous indignation has no place here. In the thousands of comments I've made here, this was one of about three which were not intended to be humorous.

The fact that we're debating whether over a guy who legally changed his surname to "eightfive" in Spanish for self-promotion purposes (and we don't even blink at that) means tradition went out the window long ago.
@Phintastic: It could be, but it would take a lot to beat out last year's Gawker holiday party. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the #herpes tag.
That photo up there really gives me a knot in my stomach. I've got two kids of my own, about that age, and thinking of leaving this earth--and them--early just about makes me sick. It's a tragedy for those poor kids, and for Chris. Regardless of the mistakes he made, it sounds like he was genuinely trying to turn his life around. RIP.
It goes without saying - let's keep it civil here, and use some quality judgment. If you can't be funny without shock or disrespect, save the joke for another circumstance.

So the NFLPA isn't just in bed with management - it's handcuffed to the bedpost, spread-eagle, with an orange gag ball in its mouth?
