Last time a DP was miscalled this badly, my buddy and I ended up dropping off some Puerto Rican hooker at the doors of the ER with $50 pinned to the collar of her Mi Orgullo t-shirt. #umpires
Along with bad umping, goes bad scoring. How could any Scorer rule that an RBI hit for Stairs in the second? A one hopper right at A-Rod. This is the majors. Third Basemen are suppose to make that play. Error on A-Rod.
@UkraineNotWeak: Because even in the World Series, official scorers are just some old, local shmucks who mourn the loss of the afternoon newspaper. #umpires
On the second DP, you could've also ruled interference on Victorino at second. He was halfway into center field and not within two feet of the bag when he slid into Jeter. #umpires
@UkraineNotWeak: So that has absolutely nothing with the topic of this article - the umpire at first base missing a clearly blatant call. Your point is terribly made. #umpires
My point is that Victorino was no where close to the bag at second when he took Jeter out on the slide and by rule could've been called for interference. That too was blatant. #umpires
Dude, there's no way any of the other umps could have seen that phillies double play ball. With two other runners on, everyone else has something they're supposed to be looking at except the outfield umps. The yankee one was regrettable.
And it seems a bit presumptuous that NOW replay is inevitable.
/Dikenger joke #umpires
@UkraineNotWeak: Exactly. And if Howard did catch it why did his fatass throw to second instead of walking to first? That's a lot of extra energy. #umpires
@twoeightnine: This is a larger problem with umpires vs. instant replay. In football, if you think a ball is fumbled, you pick it up and run toward the end zone. Baseball is not as linear - whether Howard catches that ball determines where he throws next and how the Yankeess can get out (tag vs. force). There's a larger argument here that I'm not going to make now, because I haven't formultaed it. Also, A. J. Burnett looks like a plucked turkey. #umpires
@UkraineNotWeak: If by clear view, you're assuming he got his mask off in time and could clearly see, 90+ feet away, a ball skip of the dirt by a fraction of an inch. All of this within a few seconds of being hit by the batter.
Sometimes there are bad calls where rational baseball fans have to agree, "Yeah, it was the wrong call, but I understand why they got it wrong." #umpires
@Phintastic: I have a beagle. Have you ever tried to train one of those dogs? Every morning he looks at me with this expression that says, "YOU are an asshole." #umpires
I'd be more impressed if in a much younger time in my life, I didn't attend an SF convention in Boston, which shared a hotel with the High School Football Coaches convention. Their guest of honor was Curt Gowdy (tells you how long ago this happened!). I shared an elevator with Curt on more then one occasion, and one of those times, Curt was being supported by two ladies supplied by the coaches to entertain the entertainer. Curt looked drunk enough to not even remember his own name. I see that weekend when I look at this picture of Chris Berman.
@Juancho: I'm going to have to disagree with you there since one of the requirements for a star in Langley is that you have to die in the line of duty.
Wow. What a horrible thing to say about your co-worker, shame on you. And that is poor judgement. You obvioulsly do not know this guy very well and he is better off. The bobble heads are great and he is even better. You deserve no better explanation.

Home plate ump has a clear view of it and can make the call. #umpires

That Howard catch was tough for any ump to see clearly is what I'm saying...
Oddly enough, even being a Phillies fan, the Utley double play didn't upset me too much.

leaving fans to once again wonder if a trained beagle couldn't do a better job refereeing playoff baseball games.
I think they prefer to play more than ump. #umpires
