@Nick Tom Frank: No, the UFC isn't a sport, just like the WBC, NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL aren't sports. The UFC is just one of the many organizations which promotes mixed martial arts fights, just like the WBC is just one of the many organizations which promotes boxing bouts and the NFL is just one of the many professional football leagues. So, to summarize, MMA is the sport and UFC is the league.

About a week ago, Craig Eshericks Mustache made several compelling arguments as to why MMA should be considered a sport rather than a spectacle. That whole thread is definitely worth a read if you're still unclear as to the legitimacy of MMA.
