Now he's 19 and arrested for assaulting his mother. They grow up so fast.

For unknown reasons, Nikolai went after Sun Bonds, Barry's wife from 1988 to 1994. He's been charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, assault and battery, false imprisonment, vandalism, and obstructing and resisting an officer. Plus he spat on her.

In addition to allegedly assaulting his mother during the argument, Bonds smashed picture frames and vases, destroying $400 worth of property, Acker said. He also blocked the door so his mother couldn't leave, she added.

At one point, he threw a metal doorknob at her "so hard that it embedded itself into the wall, but it missed her," Acker said. Sun Bonds was uninjured.

So, sad story, but we should let private matters stay private, right? Not if you're Rob Neyer, who I respect immensely, but for some reason decided this was all Barry Bonds's fault.

He recalls the time Barry used Nikolai as a pretense to criticize media coverage of himself, a shady move to be sure. But then this follows:

I know that a lot of baseball players aren't exactly devoted husbands and fathers. By most accounts, Barry Bonds' dad was far from a model parent. But this was beyond the pale. Bonds did something a parent should never, ever do: he used his child as a weapon.

That's the day that he lost me. I don't suppose it's fair, but I've never felt any sympathy for Bonds since then.

I feel sorry for Nikolai Bonds. His father has never grown up, and it's hard to imagine that his family life has ever been remotely stable. At 19, he's still got a chance to grow up, maybe even become reasonably happy. It's not going to be easy, though. Not with the hand he's been dealt.

Barry Bonds is probably not a very good human being, but I'm not sure he's to blame for Nikolai's outburst. He and Sun were divorced 15 years ago, and thanks to a prenup, he owed nobody anything. But he still sends her money every month, and very publicly remained a part of Nikolai's life. So it's kind of a low blow here, Rob.

<![CDATA[Miguel Cabrera's Lost Weekend]]> Oh, and if the Tigers' weekend wasn't bad enough already—those unexplained marks on Miguel Cabrera's face? There's an explanation all right and it isn't pretty. Domestic dispute. Alcohol. Cops. Fraternizing with the enemy. Oh, Miggy....

Early Saturday morning, police were called to the Cabrera home in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham on a "family trouble" incident. Cabrera's wife was upset because her husband apparently came home late, drunk, and loud and woke up their sleeping daughter. Obviously, that did not go over well. When police arrived, Miguel had scratches on his face and a broken necklace and his wife had a fat lip, but neither would say what happened. The cops took Miguel to the police station, gave him a blood alcohol test—which he failed miserably—and released to him to the custody of the Tigers.

Investigators determined that both husband and wife were "aggressors" so there's a good chance no charges will be filed. However, Tiger fans who might be willing to look the other way on the domestic abuse will probably have a harder time forgiving Cabrera's baseball transgression. The reason he came home so late was because he was out partying with members of the Chicago White Sox.

It's bad enough he was getting hammered in the middle of the most important series of the year and staying out until 6:00 a.m. the night before a must-win, season-on-the-line game, but to get sloshed alongside the team that's standing in your way? Yuking it up with a "hated" rival just hours after they put your playoff hopes in jeopardy? I'm beginning to suspect his commitment to laid off auto workers is not as strong as we've been led to believe.

By they way, Cabrera went 0-11 this weekend. That doesn't help either.

<![CDATA[Lampley's Accuser Really Could Have Done Better Than Lampley]]> lampleyslady.jpgThe woman who accused Jim Lampley of slapping her around has been identified, and it's... well, it's a nice pull on the part of Jim Lampley, that's what it is. Her name is Candice Sanders, and she was Miss California USA 2003. What she was doing with Jim Lampley, I couldn't tell you. She probably has her own questions about that at the moment.

She alleges that Lamps was both drunk and high at the time of the assault, and that he bounced her off of two walls and against a door. She says she then instructed Lampley's son, a 14-year-old, to call the police, and Lampley got to the phone before the kid and wouldn't let him call.

Sounds like a real prince. I think there's just too much violence on television, and it's starting to have a terrible effect on our children. And on our Lampleys.

<![CDATA[Jim Lampley MADE YOU!]]> lampley.jpgHBO boxing sportscaster Jim Lampley was arrested in San Diego County on charges of "suspicion of domestic violence and other counts" late yesterday afternoon. According to gossip juggernaut TMZ.com, Lampley was arrested at his girlfriend's home and had been under investigation because of previous complaints. There are no mugshot photos, norwill there be one, because, according to a source at the always reliable Smoking Gun, San Diego County does not release them. Dammit.

Lampley has apparently been married three times, one time to this terrifying looking woman, Bree Walker, who was formerly an anchor at San Diego station KNSD and Los Angeles' CBS affiliate, was also in violation of a restraining order when the incident occurred yesterday.

This begs many questions about Lampley's character, but first and foremost, does this mean he will no longer be able to blog at The Huffington Post?

<![CDATA[Calling Mom For Domestic Backup]]> miltonbradleynationaltreasu.jpgSome more updates on the domestic abuse allegations against notoriously angry Dodgers outfielder Milton Bradley. The Daily Breeze reviewed the 911 calls that started the whole allegations, and apparently, it was in fact Bradley who made the calls in order to calm down his "crazy" wife.

Bradley said his wife somehow knew — possibly through a friend working at a wireless phone company —that he had called a friend in Moreno Valley.

"She is complaining I'm talking to some people and that I'm cheating or something, and making no sense whatsoever," Bradley said.

His wife can be heard in the background shouting at him, including the statement, "I want to go home." Pots and pans or dishes clang as if something was thrown.

"Get away from me!" Bradley yelled at her. "She's in the room right now. You better get over here!"

In one instance, Bradley's 70-year-old mother was beckoned to help settle the repeated arguments, which is the type of backup you don't call for when you're punching someone. We're wondering if his wife, to counter, called for Jeff Kent.

<![CDATA[The Wrong Way To Prepare For Your First Game]]> larryjohnsonchiefs.jpgWell, that's just great timing. Fresh off the first time in three years of backing up Priest Holmes that he has ever been able to show himself off — he had the best game of his career Sunday — Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has gotten himself in trouble with the law again. According to the Kansas City Star, Johnson is accused of assaulting a woman at a KC bar early Saturday morning (the day before the game). More specifically, shoving her backwards and "violently" grabbing her right wrist.

The details appear to be that Johnson had been "dating" the woman, and when she popped by the bar, she saw him with another "date." This being 2005, after seeing her, Johnson sent her a text message saying to meet her downstairs, and the tussle occurred then.

We would be more willing to give Johnson the benefit of the doubt here — the woman making the allegations already disputes some parts of the police report — if he didn't have a history of this sort of thing; in December 2003, police said he slapped his girlfriend and threatened her with a handgun. But hey: This time he just sent a threatning text message, rather than a threatening gun. The kid, he's learning.
