I wouldn't normally single out an individual opinion piece for criticism (because if anyone did that to me, I'd be ruined), but ... come on. Why would anyone defend Matt Millen? How could anyone defend Matt Millen? The thesis revolves around the fact that Millen has been hired to do color commentary for the NFL Network, which will keep him steadily employed by football despite that fact that he appears to know nothing about football. He is unquestionably the worst GM of all time. However, Banks is actually happy to seem him back in the booth and thinks his star will rise again, somehow rendering my previous sentence irrelevant.

His model for Millen's redemption? Richard Milhous Nixon.

I know it all sounds a bit preposterous right now, predicting a comeback before he's even done his penance. But when I think of Millen, I just get the feeling he's got a shot to become something of the Richard Nixon of the NFL, picking up the pieces of a colossal failure and re-emerging to prominence at some point in the future. Dare we say it, perhaps even an eventual return to power in some team's personnel department?

First of all, he has not served any penance. He was unemployed for two months and then his friends gave him a job. That's part of the problem. Second, let's clear up the matter of whether Matt Millen was a good broadcaster. May I quote the esteemed Dr. Magary?

The whole reason Matt Millen was laughed at when he started out in Detroit was because EVERYONE FUCKING HATED HIM AS A BROADCASTER. He took John Madden's broadcasting style and somehow managed to make even more inane, spawning a legion of similar broadcasters in the process. Wanna know where fucking Bill Maas came from? MILLEN. Mark fucking Schlereth? MILLEN. Any shithead analyst that has nothing to say outside of, "I tell you one thing, Eli Manning is a COMPETITOR"? MILLEN.

That's all Matt Millen's doing. Why the FUCK would anyone bring him back to TV, especially in light of what he did to the Lions? The man has all the credibility of fucking InventHelp. And anyone who tells you, "Hey, Millen was actually an okay broadcaster!" is fucking wrong.

Every word of that quote is true. (Especially the ones in all caps.) Millen led the revolution of Madden clones that infect our sports world today. Rising to the top of the Fox Sports chain is proof of mediocrity, not greatness. The most hated color men in baseball are Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan, Fox and ESPN's No. 1 guys respectfully. Millen was terrible. The end.

But back to Nixon. He was the vice-president in 1960, lost the presidential election to John Kennedy, lost a governor's race in 1962 and everyone assumed his political career was dead and buried. Then all of the sudden, it's 1969 and he's the President of the United States. An amazing turnaround, right?

Then he became the most corrupt and hated man to ever hold that office and was forced to resign in shame. Maybe Banks didn't read all the way to the end of the history book, but Nixon's second act was actually worse than the first one! If everyone had remembered in 1968 how awful the guy was in 1960, the world would be a better place right now.

When I said that Banks was comparing Millen to Nixon, didn't you assume he meant post-Watergate Nixon, since that historic debacle is the only thing that could possibly compare to the failure of the Detroit Lions? Nope. Banks is saying that Millen has even bigger failures ahead of him. Oh joy.

In the end, I quess I actually agree with Banks. I can see Millen resurrecting his career the way Nixon did ... and then he will perpetrate one of the worst crimes imaginable on the citizenry of this country. The ARE exactly alike. Millen proved it in his phone interview with Banks:

"You're not going to believe this,'' said Millen, laughing heartily. "But one of my favorite shirts I have — in fact, I have it on right now — has a picture of Dick Nixon on it,

The man is wearing a Richard Nixon shirt RIGHT NOW! It's his FAVORITE!! He's a Nixon BUFF!! GRAAHAHA CAPS LOCK!!! STOP DEFENDING THIS MAN!!!!

I hate you all so much right now.

<![CDATA[Matt Millen Gets Overwhelming Lack of Confidence Vote From Lions' Brass]]> It appears some of the Lions ownership family has its own collection of "Fire Millen" brown paper bag masks and is about to start wearing them in public if things don't turn around for Detroit's woeful football team. William Ford Jr., son of Lions' principle owner William Clay Ford and vice chairman of the Lions, exasperated by the Lions' continued putridity under Matt Millen's scatter-brained managerial reign, decided it was time to voice his displeasure with Millen to the Detroit News. Ford told the paper, "It's embarrassing," and that if "had the authority" he'd personally shove Millen out the door. But he can't. All he can do is watch the team continue to fail miserably and draft wide receivers for Jon Kitna to overthrow.

Ultimately, this type of public flogging will probably not result in any immediate dismissal for Millen and only result in Ford Jr. issuing an apology for insubordination. Millen signed a five-year contract extension back in 2005 where the elder Ford backed Millen. Here's that infamous quote: “I think Matt has built a great foundation for us to move forward. I cannot think of anyone better to see it through than Matt.”

His son probably has a few suggestions.

<![CDATA[The Lions Continue To Be A Feel-Good Story In Detroit]]> Let's see ... how could Matt Millen and the Detroit Lions possibly alienate fans any more than they already have. Hmm. Well, jeez, you know, we just can't think of anything; we can't imagine a conceivable way they could devastate that fan base more completely. Wait, here's one: They could tell their fanbase to fuck off. Literally.

Accidentally, of course. A fan trying to cancel his season tickets got a rather unfriendly message from a team employee.

Furlong canceled his season tickets in an e-mail to Schul. Powser then e-mailed Furlong with an offer for more desirable seats, but Furlong said it was a matter of principle — and he wouldn't accept the offer. Then Furlong received the inadvertent e-mail from [team employee] Schul.

The entire e-mail reads, "Lance...he is not talking about you here. Mark was asked to speak to these people and he said no. Fuck 'em until next year."

The real telling part of the story, we thought, is how Furlong, the season ticket holder, found his seats constantly downgraded each year, which is why he canceled his season tickets in the first place. God, Lions fans: Enjoy the Pistons while you can.

<![CDATA[You Can Never Get Rid Of Matt Millen. Ever.]]> Sometimes big fan movements make a difference, changing the course of sports through a considerable mix of gumption and volume, like with the Rory Fitzpatrick NHL All-Star balloting, which still has a chance to send him into the starting lineup.

And then there's the Fire Millen movement. Lions fans have been trying to rid themselves of the ineffectual general manager for, jeez, five years now? And it has done nothing, made no difference, done nothing but make him stronger. At this point, it seems clear that Matt Millen's never going to leave Detroit, and he could care less. This weekend is yet another "Fire Millen" protest in Detroit, almost exactly a year since the last one. But Matt Millen will outlast us all; we not only think he'll survive in Detroit, we expect him to be running two or three other franchises by the end of the decade.

<![CDATA[Setting The 1 o'clock Table...]]> • Pittsburgh @ Cleveland. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger makes an emotional return to Ohio, where he was only good enough in high school to be runner up for the title of Mr. Football in 1999. So if you you see Ben running around the field screaming, "Where's your Bam Childress NOW, bitches?" you'll understand why.
• San Diego @ Kansas City. This could be Dick Vermeil's penultimate game as head coach of the Chiefs, writes John Clayton. Crazy playoff implications also abound, and this is probably your game of the day.
• Detroit @ New Orleans. Happy birthday, Jesus. Here, enjoy all the worst of humanity, stuffed conventiently into one location. I'd say it's about even money on us seeing Santa Claus with a "Fire Millen" sign before the day's over.

<![CDATA[FIRE MILLEN]]>
Sorry about the headline, I just felt left out. Everyone else is chanting it or holding a sign. I wanted to join the parade.

A Detroit radio station organized a Fire Millen March today, with fans marching five blocks from a local bar to Ford Field for the Bengals/Lions game today. And just in case anyone was unconvinced of their point, the Lions are currently reinforcing it by losing 24-7 to the Bengals in the 2nd quarter.

Somehow, this slipped by me, but Rasheed Wallace joined in a "Fire Millen" chant that took place at a Pistons game this week. That seems like a very Rasheed thing to do. If they lose out, I just wonder if we'll see it written on his shoes at some point.

There was also a Chad Johnson TD in the game, though I must confess I missed it. I haven't seen a replay of it, either, but CliffX made a comment about it here. Sounds very decent.
