I'm glad he'll be focusing on music. The world needs a CD with versions of Farewell to Nova Scotia, The Maple Leaf Forever, and Ode to Newfoundland now more than ever.
You share a network with bull-riding and WEC "Wreckage" yet you're somehow trying to convince us that you want to be less violent? Die in a fire, Bettman.
Fighting makes pools ("fantasy hockey" for the uninitiated) way more fun. If you don't get to pick guys just for the penalty minutes they rack up, then you're stuck drafting boring nice guys. Besides, isn't the compeition for the Lady Byng Trophy already cut-throat enough?
When two guys square up to fight they assume the risk that they might get hurt. Isn't that the point of fighting? How many fights have there been in all levels of hockey over how many years, there's one freak accident and this has suddenly become a big issue?
Fighting is part of hockey, just accept it. Unless you've played the game, it's impossible to explain.
When you have two guys that are pissed at each other dropping the gloves, it's usually an intense battle and the score is settled right there.
The problem is the "staged" fights, when one goon fights another goon for no reason other than proving how worthless they are to their team by being expendable for a 5 minute penalty. These plugs are totally useless and watching them play is embarrassing to hockey. Unless you can play the game you shouldn't have a roster spot.
In all seriousness though, it's entirely possible/plausible that a player could smack their head on the ice during regular play. The fights are a big part of the draw, especially for more passive fans. If the NHL thinks they're having financial problems now, take away the fighting and see where it leaves them.

The Mountie was Jacques Rougeau, who was from just outside Montreal.

Actually, the Mountie won the Intercontinental Title once, I believe for about a week or so.
