Jon Wertheim Tells The Ultimate ‘Sheed/Isaiah Rider Story]]> We got two excellent stories out of this week's Deadcast guest: Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon Wertheim.

The first one is a story from his recent, excellent book on the UFC, "Blood In The Cage," regarding an old judo master who made Steven Seagal poop himself. Nice.

The second story involves Rasheed Wallace back in his days playing for the Trail Blazers. Early in Wallace's career, he was involved in a nasty child custody battle with his baby mama. That woman ended up kidnapping Wallace's son. Wertheim, working for SI, was sent to Portland to cover the story of the kidnapping. Wallace agreed to cooperate with the story as a way of raising awareness of his son's disappearance. (He had, in fact, gone on live TV to ask people to help in the return of his son).

But when Wertheim got to Portland, Wallace told him that, before anything, he had to go out bowling that night with Gary Trent and Isaiah Rider. So Wertheim, in his rental car, followed the three players in their SUV as they made their way to the alley. Only they couldn't find the alley, so the three players then decided to stop the car RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING STREET while they tried to sort out where the alley was.

One motorist honked at the players to get moving. In response, Rider proceeded to hock a loogie on the motorist's windshield.

Oh, Isaiah. Don't you ever change. Wallace eventually found his son and gained full custody. Not before bowling a 132, one would assume.

Wertheim and I also discuss how Dana White's online tirade against reporter Loretta Hunt affects the UFC, amateur MMA night at rural strip clubs, the future of Sports Illustrated, his new book on Federer/Nadal, and lots more.

This week's podcast is available for your listening pleasure right here. You can also find the new Deadcast in the iTunes Music Store here. Special thanks to Liberated Syndication for hosting us. Got an email for me or next week's guest (Stefan Fatsis) you want read over the air? Send it to me here. Now sit back, relax, and listen to Jon's loogie story.

<![CDATA[Isaiah Rider Continues Excelling On Fast Track To Life Imprisonment]]> Former UNLV great and NBA troublemaker Isaiah (nee J.R.) Rider is back in trouble with the man THE MAN again, after he skipped out on his arraignment hearing , according to TMZ. Rider was supposed to report to court to deal with this whole mess, but missed it for reasons unknown at this time. (My guess: alarm on cellphone didn't go off because he forgot to charge it. That happens to me, like, once a week.)

Before and after college Rider's had a career marred by character issues, milkshake assaults, drug use, battery, theft — all sorts of nonsense. Rider, who is 37-years-old and not doing anything productive with his life right now, but there still seemed to be little chance that this guy was actualy making this arraignment. He doesn't seem like a morning person.

Right now, the story is still listed as "developing", so I'll post an update if anybody ever finds out where Rider is.

<![CDATA[Nothing Like A Golden Oldie]]> Not much more we can add to this:

Oakland police reported Tuesday that former NBA player Isaiah "J.R." Rider, 35, was arrested early Sunday for felony cocaine possession at a home in the Oakland hills.

Lt. James Meeks would not say how much cocaine was found nor would he elaborate on details of the bust.

Honestly, at this point, the news would be if Rider hadn't been arrested for felony cocaine possession on Sunday.

We have to say, though, that in a time of chaos and global uncertainty, we can always count on good ole J.R. to always be J.R. Well, unless he's Isaiah. You know what we mean.

<![CDATA[The Sad, Troubled Times of J.R. Rider]]> If Ron Artest is serious about rehabilitating his image with the Sacramento Kings, then he got a boost on Thursday — Isaiah Rider is back in the news. Artest has had his problems, sure. But next to Rider, Artest is Ned Flanders.

It is with a tinge of sadness, but no surprise, that we note Rider's arrest on Thursday in Marin County, Calif., for kidnapping and battery. Bail was set at $2 million. The guy of whom UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian said was "probably the most talented player I have ever coached," who averaged 29.1 points per game his senior season at UNLV in 1992-93, never had the NBA career most would have predicted. Or maybe he did.

Drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1993, Rider started his pro career with a bang — by showing up late to his first practice. What followed in six-plus seasons in the NBA was a series of arrests, fines and suspensions. He bounced from the Timberwolves to the Trail Blazers, Hawks and Lakers, leaving in his trouble of every sort imaginable. He was suspended in 1999 for going into the stands during a game with the Golden State Warriors. He was arrested for gambling, for assault, for drugs, you name it. While with the Trail Blazers, he threatened to have a reporter killed. Then he did the same to teammate Dikembe Mutumbo. He was arrested more than once on allegations of rape. By 2001, finally, mercifully, his career was over. It ended almost comically, with Rider a no-show for the first two days of training camp with the Denver Nuggets — getting to the Pepsi Center right behind the Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus, which was playing there for the weekend. Yes, he was beaten to practice by elephants.

So yeah, compared to that, Ron Artest is the banker dad from Mary Poppins. And let's hope he stays that way.
