As you might guess, this one's a little weird.

In some ways, it's an old story: Onetime New York star washes out of Broadway and finds himself doing a crappy South Florida production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? From the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

Karrie Leyritz called police from a neighbor's house, where she fled after the alleged argument, a police report said.

When officers arrived about 3 a.m., she was bleeding from a cut above her eye.

Police found streaks of blood on a wall at the Leytriz home, according to the report.

Karrie Leyritz told police what happened and admitted she had been drinking, the report said.

But police said in the report that the victim gave two "totally different" accounts of what happened.

First, she said she argued with her ex-husband in the foyer, then he hit her and pushed her to the ground.

Later, she said he dragged her out of bed and rammed her against the bedroom wall, the report said.

Karrie Leyritz denies giving two different versions of the story and says she was "misunderstood." The argument started in the bedroom, she said, and ended in the foyer.

Police woke up their three children, who apparently slept through the incident. The two children they spoke to didn't hear anything strange early this morning, the report said.

It's all very strange and will probably put an end to the sputtering Jim Leyritz Image Rehabilitation Tour that nearly had him signing autographs at a minor-league game last month. The most bizarre part of the story? It's this:

One child said he heard his parents argue earlier that evening, but that his mother was drunk and likely hit herself.

<![CDATA[The Rehabilitation Of Jim Leyritz Continues Apace, One Minor League Promotion At A Time]]> Get out your autograph books, kids — it's Legends Sunday at the Newark Bears' ballpark, and guess who'll be there! Why, none other than Jim "Jimmy" Leyritz, the legend on trial for vehicular manslaughter!

The promotion amusingly refers to Leyritz as a former Newark Bear, which, strictly speaking, is true. In 2001, he played in 19 games and hit a legendary .296. The "Jimmy" is an especially nice touch. The diminutive form is always good for taking the edge off vehicular manslaughter.

This appears to be the second stop on the Jim Leyritz Redemption Tour, the first being Dan Le Batard's warm shoulder. I'm not entirely sure that an independent-league ballpark in Jersey is the wisest choice, especially for someone who was recently said to be suicidal, but, as the man told Le Batard, he's all about "reintroducing the truth every day." He'll get plenty of truth in Newark.

<![CDATA[Jim Leyritz's Life Somehow Gets Even Sadder]]> Former Yankee Jim Leyrtiz—who is still awaiting trial on a fatal DUI incident—was placed in a psychiatric hospital last night after allegedly threatening to commit suicide.

According to the New York Post, Leyritz has a breathalyzer attached to his car that he must blow into before attempting to drive and last night the device failed, indicating that he had been drinking. His wife told police that he had not been drinking and when he later went back to the car, he passed the same test. However, Leyritz became distraught because he was concerned that the false positive would be reported anyway and he would be found in violation of his bail. He's already been accused of trying to drive his car while drunk four different times since being released on bail and there's been no confirmation yet, on whether he was actually drinking yesterday.

Karri [his wife] then told cops that Leyritz said something to the effect that, "He might as well 'end it' if it's too much trouble," Coyne said.

When police talked to Leyritz, who was at the house, he told them, "I just need to talk to somebody," Coyne said. Officers told him he could voluntarily go to the hospital, Coyne said.

He checked himself in to the hospital and was released back to his home this morning. So Jim is obviously a bit of a mess. And he still has jail to look forward to.

<![CDATA[Jim Leyritz Will Soldier On Somehow]]> You no doubt recall the legal trouble facing Jim Leyritz, the former Yankee who is free on bail pending his DUI manslaughter trial. Leyritz is accused of being involved in an accident while driving drunk, in which a young mother was killed. Well, last week Leyritz asked a judge to remove a Breathalyzer device from his car because it was "bothersome."

Leyritz has to keep the device in his car as a condition of his release. But this is a hardship, according to his lawyers.

From the New York Post:

"He cannot leave the car with a valet, because it cannot be started by the valet," his lawyers said in a statement. And he "can't eat things like chicken Marsala," said his ex-wife, Karri, because certain foods cause false positives.

No valet parking at fine Italian restaurants? Damn it ... do the courts not have one ounce of human decency?

<![CDATA[Remember To Have Sympathy For Jim Leyritz Tonight]]>

Former Yankees' catcher Jim Leyritz, seen above, wobbling and ivehashjushacoupladrinksh-ing for Fort Lauderdale police before his DUI arrest last Dec. 28th is upset. That night Leyritz, 44, was involved in an accident with 30-year-old Plantation, Fla., native Freida Veitch. Veitch had a BAC of .18, but was killed in the accident. Leyritz is awaiting trial for DUI and manslaughter charges. Tragic and disturbing circumstances, of course, but what's also disturbing is Leyritz's pouting over the Yankees not making him feel welcome during the All-Star festivities.

Leyritz, who showed up this week not as a guest of the Yankees, says he "understands" why the organization wouldn't want him involved in the Old Timer's game or any other events, "But at the same time, yes, I am disappointed somewhat in not being able to be a part of it, because of the history that I have there."

Somebody's got a wacky sense of entitlement. Yes, Leyritz is technically not guilty for the time being, but did he drink away his tact that night in Florida as well? Don't show up, dude. And if you do show up, be prepared to answer questions about how you possibly killed a woman after getting hammered on your 44th birthday.

Oh, and if you, media member, would rather ask Jim about that whole manslaughter trial and not give him any ink about the Yankees' perceived mistreatment of him, he's handing out prepared statements from his attorneys about all that.

"Unfortunately, I am unable to comment about the specific facts of what took place that early morning; however, the testimony of the witnesses and other evidence produced to date fully support our defense," Leyritz said. Of course, he does.

<![CDATA[Ex-Yankee Jim Leyritz Drives Drunk, Kills Woman]]> Oh gee, what a glorious way to end the sports year! Ugh. Former Yankees catcher Jim Leyritz was arrested Friday on charges of driving under the influence and killing another driver. He posted the $11,000 bond and was released. (Note: $11,000 can pay for one hell of a cab ride, Jim.)

The sad details:

Fort Lauderdale authorities got a call at 3:20 a.m. that a crash occurred in the city's entertainment district, [Detective Kathy] Collins said. She said Leyritz was driving a 2006 Ford Expedition when he collided at an intersection with 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch of Plantation, who was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Motero.

Veitch was ejected from the car, police said. She died at Broward General Medical Center, Collins said.

Witnesses told police Leyritz had a red light. Officers on the scene observed Leyritz to have red, watery eyes, a flushed face and an odor of alcohol, police said.

Leyritz was apparently out celebrating his 44th birthday. So all together now:

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday, you stupid fucking idiot,
It really should have been you
