    I'd like to think I'm a reasonably intelligent man, and in general I know my sports, but honestly, calvin ball and cricket have more discernible rules than roller-derby.. but i've figured this much out:


    1. Strap roller-skates onto a bunch of over-tatooed truck-stop waitresses with questionable hygiene;

    2. Have them skate in circles while they wail on each other;

    3. ????

    4. Profit.

    I roomed with a girl who's part of the Big Easy Roller Girls. It started all well and good until the power got cut off cause she hadn't paid the bills. Oh, and then she called me "the single source of unhappiness in all of my life."

    Can you define mainstream? Given that there are over 100 roller derby leagues internationally, that Chipotle is a sponsor of WFTDA ([www.wftda.com]), the national organization of lady derby leagues, that the sport has been covered by just about every major news outlet, that there's a movie about roller derby that's directed by Drew Barrymore (and starring Ellen Page) coming out next year, and that, last I heard, there's a video game in development... well, I'd kinda say they're mainstream already.


    But maybe I'm just saying that because I'm a retired rollergirl.
