By noon next Monday, Eric Mangini and his entire coaching staff should be cleaning out their offices. Fourth and less than 1 on the Seahawk 2 on the first drive of the game, a drive in which you've pushed them around, and you kick the field goal. Set the tone that you were playing not to lose rather than to win. Has coached like that the last four weeks.
You know, I could make the same lame ass Favre joke like every third person on this thread but the Jets' problems down the stretch run much deeper than Favre. It goes directly to the coaching staff and how they've prepared for and handled the games. The words that comes to mind are "out of their depth".
tough to put everything on mangini...the nfl has caught on that favre is just a (not very good) game manager at QB. stop the run and roll everyone up vs the dink-and-dunk.
unlike good game manager QBs, favre is not patient and will "gunsling" a few INTs sooner or later.
@calmasacucumber: The receivers in Green Bay also seemed better suited to Favre's abilities and style of play than those in New York. Jennings is a great deep ball and run after the catch guy, and Driver was a reliable, go over the middle, get the tough yards kidn of guy. Coles and Cotchery seem a few steps below those two.
@calmasacucumber: Just outstanding analysis. Except Seattle did not "stop the run" as much as the Jets stopped running. Thomas Jones ran 17 times at 4 yards a clip.
The thing is they stopped running it on their own. Thomas Jones was ripping off 4-5 yards a carry at the beginning of the game and they giving him the ball. Leon Washington is an explosive back everytime he touches the ball and they basically didn't utilize him. I'll give a for instance. Second quarter. Jets up 3-0. Have the ball around their own 40. Joneds goes for 7 on first down tio set up 2nd and 3. They've been running easily on Seattle all day. Nex t two play calls are slant and not even off of play action. Something has been working with easde all day and you abandon it just like that. Keep doing it until they can prove that they can stop it or at least play action off of it.
@UkraineNotWeak: There's no doubt losing a football game is a team effort. But that loss was one based on decision-making, not performance per se. Mangini got timid. Favre through an absolutely awful cross-the-field pick and that 4th and 5 play? Why not get 6 instead of throwing to a double covered Coles? The defense and RBs are stout. You say the problem is the coaching staff, which may be true, but do not forget that Favre isn't coachable.
They're running the same offense that they ran with Chad Pennington. Nothing has changed. Still don't have a receiver who can reliably get separation or you have to double up on.
The worse part of the coaching is even on the offensive side of the ball. Bob Sutton has to be the worse Defensive Coordinator in the NFL. The man simply doesn't believe in sending pressure after the QB. They play the most vanilla defense in all of the NFL. Seattle had a thrown together OL yesterday and the Jets still couldn't do anything with it. Didn't try to confuse it at all.
@UkraineNotWeak: And like I said before, I didn't see too many games this year, maybe two that I can remember, but I know what didn't help the vanilla defense you mentioned earlier, Vernon Gholston and his 12 (4 solo) tackles 0 sacks on the year. Hopefully he bounces back next year and isn't a bust.
@Afino: hey, at least Favre would be able to throw it that far. J.P. Losman would just hit the cameraman. /delighted Neckbeard Jr. has become a Deadspin punchline, he was way overdue for it
@Skating Tomato: If any three of you want to come to the Bills-Pats game on Sunday, let me know. At least we can see legitimate quarterback/soon-to-be tax bracket jumper Matt Cassel play the position correctly.
Will Cassel success transfer anywhere else? Will he go to another team that has a legitimate home run threat who must be doubled, Moss, and a crafty slot receiver, Welker, who catches everything thrown to him as part of their receiver core?

Some of us hate Favre and don't care about the Jets.
Is that fair?

Too early to call him a bust. Look what happened with Mario Williams? Didn't break out until his second year.
