As you know, Smith popped cornerback Ken Lucas in the eye during practice on Friday, with the resultant damage being: a broken nose that will require surgery for Lucas, and a suspension without pay for the first two regular-season games for Smith. Earlier today, Smith provided this mea culpa:

“I’m not going to get into who’s right, who’s wrong. I’m completely wrong,” Smith said. “It was an asinine decision. And I’ll move forward better than I probably have ever had to. It’s the first time in my life that I really haven’t forgiven myself.”

“I’m a fallen man. I’m a man that made a mistake,” Smith said. “I plan to mend the bridges that I’ve burned and help rebuild the bridge, if I need to all by myself.”

I know what you're thinking, but this is not at all classic abuser-speak. It will never, ever happen again, baby! Even so, my advice is for Lucas to stay in his hyperberic chamber for a couple of weeks.

<![CDATA[Steve Smith Punched a Teammate; Training Camp Has Officially Begun]]> The fists of Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith rudely introduced themselves to teammate Ken Lucas's face yesterday, and both guys were kicked out of practice. Lucas, though, had to be treated for injuries on the field before he was taken to the locker room. I'm sure that did wonders for his manhood and self-esteem.

Of course, this isn't the first time Smith has hit a teammate after the whistle, so to speak. In 2002, he was suspended for a game after punching Anthony Bright during a film session. The anger-management counseling he received following that incident has clearly worn off. No word yet from the Panthers if their star wideout will receive a suspension this time around.

Finally, there's this small bit of hilarity brought to our attention by hawk-eyed reader Dan:

"There is a Reebok animated banner ad that pops up randomly on ESPN.com featuring Steve Smith. He's in the locker room, hands taped up like a boxer with one frame of the ad featuring him in a boxer's stance and the next with his taped up fist right in the center of the ad. At this point, probably more inappropriate than any teabagging from Nike."

<![CDATA[Setting The 1 o'clock Table...]]> • Chicago @ Pittsburgh. The Bears will be without safety Mike Brown and starting right guard Terrence Metcalf. Pittsburgh will be without any healthy joints on their starting quarterback. And can someone explain to me why Pittsburgh is a 6-point favorite here?
• Indianapolis @ Jacksonville. Many people think this is the one Indianapolis will lose. I respectfully disagree. It's the game that could lock up home field advantage for them, and that's what they've been gunning for this whole time. That's been the point of this whole thing. I don't see them letting the opportunity pass.
• Tampa Bay @ Carolina. Tampa Bay needs this game worse than Adam Morrison needs a razor. Conversely, Carolina has the opportunity to just about lock up the division. And if Chad Johnson is held out of the endzone again, Steve Smith might be the best we have.

<![CDATA[Why Steve Smith Will Always Be Second]]> A friend of ours yesterday was asking us why, in our unprofessional opinion, Chad Johnson receives so much love for his touchdown celebrations while the Panthers' Steve Smith, who scores more touchdowns, catches more passes and does his own fair share of creative celebrating, is barely noticed. We found this a compelling question; we hadn't thought about it that way. For a moment, we thought our friend might be right; maybe we weren't giving Smith enough credit.

But when Smith did his "changing the baby's diaper" routine after his touchdown yesterday, it solidified for us why Smith is a great player and a good touchdown celebrator, but he'll never be in Johnson's class. Smith's main two TD celebrations have been the diaper business yesterday, and his swashbuckler after a touchdown against the Buccaneers earlier this year. Those are both clever. But, ultimately, somewhat pedestrian; changing the diaper is a funny for emasculated suburban dads, at least until they remember that changing diapers really is a large part of their lives. Chad Johnson's celebrations? Cheerleaders, and golf. The artistry of touchdown celebrations has been lifted to a point that we can have discussions on their merit based on subtext; Johnson tempts you with what life could be like, while Smith reminds you what it is.

Of course, it's possible we're looking too much into it.
