Important Note: This Was The Worst Olympic Cauldron-Lighting Ceremony Ever
Last night, our colleague Erik Malinowski posted a video of the torch-lighting at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. He called it the "greatest Olympic cauldron lighting ceremony ever."
He was sort of right, because that cauldron-lighting was a cool and uplifting moment and it makes us all feel warm in our hearts about The Glory of Sport and all that. But he was sort of wrong, too, because the Olympics are all about poor planning and defeat and embarrassment on an international stage, and nothing speaks to those themes like the cauldron lighting in Seoul in 1988.
Those doves got char-broiled. Poor things. Stupid Olympics.
