The University Of Washington Has Put Twitter Restrictions On Media Members
Are you a college basketball or football writer who constantly tweets while covering games? Cut that shit out when you're at the University of Washington. The university has implemented limitations on tweeting about football and basketball games, because...well, we're not really sure. No media members had been warned of excessive tweeting, until Todd Dybas of the Tacoma News Tribune unknowingly crossed the line Sunday while covering the Huskies' men's basketball opener against Loyola (MD).
As Taylor Soper of GeekWire points out, the university has a "Live Coverage Policy" in place for media members. According to Dybas, this policy was enacted before the start of the football season:
Periodic updates of scores, statistics or other brief descriptions of the competition throughout the event are acceptable, as long as they do not exceed the recommended frequency (20 total in-game updates for basketball, 45 total in-game updates for football). Credential Holder agrees that the determination of whether an outlet is posting a real-time description shall be in UW's sole discretion. If UW deems that a Credential Holder is producing a real-time description of the contest, UW reserves all actions against Credential Holder, including but not limited to the revocation of the credential.
Although it's an awful idea to limit a media's tweeting capacity—if it gets that bad, there already is a thing called Twitter jail, guys—is anyone really going to glean any crucial knowledge from tweets like "What touch!"? Most beat writers would be well served to tone down the live-tweeting a bit.
