Rangers vs. Bruins Prediction: Best Bets for NHL Opening Night

The New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins meet in the regular-season opener for the 2026-27 National Hockey League (NHL) season. This game will mostly be going on at the same time as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox open an American League Wild Card series, as the sports rivalry between these cities is as hot as ever.

These Original Six members squared off three times last season, with New York winning two of the three meetings, while splitting the two battles at TD Garden in Massachusetts. The Rangers won 6-2 in the first meeting as moderate favorites on Nov. 28, 2025, while the Bruins annihilated the Rangers 10-2 on Jan. 10 as favorites at home. The Over cashed in all three meetings, too.

Rangers vs. Bruins bet picks

New York made a big splash with the acquisition of left wing Pavel Dorofeyev from the Vegas Golden Knights for a series of picks. He had consecutive seasons with 35 or more goals with VGK, and he gives the Blueshirts a much-needed injection of offense.

In addition to Dorofeyev, the Rangers have Joonas Korpisalo to help tend net, and he played last season with the Bruins. He’ll serve as the backup to Igor Shesterkin, and he figured to be a major upgrade as Jonathan Quick was awful in his final season in 2025-26. Eeli Tolvanen also was added to bolster the offense, while joining Oliver Bjorkstrand.

For Boston, F JJ Peterka hopes to find a home in Beantown, and he looks to fill the boots of Viktor Arvidsson, who potted 25 goals last season. C Fraser Minten inked a big seven-year deal, as Boston builds around the pivot for the future.

Shesterkin is expected to start for the Rangers, while Jeremy Swayman is projected to get the start for the Bruins.

While the Rangers had a nightmare season, Shesterkin was 25-19-6 with a 2.50 GAA and .912 SV% with a shutout in his 51 starts. He won his only start against the Bruins on Nov. 28, 2025 at TD Garden, kicking aside 19 of 21 shots.

For Swayman, he posted a 31-18-4 mark with a 2.71 GAA and .908 SV% and a pair of shutouts in 54 starts and 55 regular-season appearances. The Alaskan received copious amounts of goal support in his only start against the Rangers, as he started that 10-2 victory at TD Garden back on Jan. 10.

These are two proud franchises looking for much better results in the 2026-27 season, but the Bruins made more of what would be considered lateral moves, but Dorofeyev is a major upgrade for the Rangers. I think Shesterkin is slightly better than Swayman, too.

Let’s take the RANGERS (-106) as slight underdogs, and we’ll go OVER 5.5 (-130) on the total, as that was the rule last season when these rivals met.
