At Least 12 Iowa Hawkeye Football Players Hospitalized
The Quad City Times is reporting at least a dozen University of Iowa football players were admitted to university hospitals last night for "undisclosed illnesses."
Other reports have "undisclosed illnesses" as being connected to offseason workouts. And yet another report cites it as "exertional rhabdomyolysis ... an acute breakdown of muscle fibers resulting in the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream." [ Cedar Rapids Gazette]
"The student-athletes were admitted throughout the course of Monday evening," said the physician, who also was not named in the release. "All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition. At this time we are not sure when any of the individuals will be discharged. Hospital discharge will be on a case-by-case basis."
Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said, "Our next step is to find out what happened so we can avoid this happening in the future." Names of the afflicted weren't released.
