Atlanta Will Demolish Turner Field After The Braves Leave
The Braves' move to Cobb County is no done deal. No contract has been signed, no financing secured for a new stadium. But Braves VP of business ops Mike Plant says he's "100 percent certain it will happen," and Atlanta's mayor is behaving like it, promising to tear down Turner Field rather than let it sit vacant.
Mayor Kasim Reed said the city has been planning a replacement for the stadium for months, indicating that Atlanta has long known it wouldn't match the reported $450 million in public funds being offered by Cobb County.
"We're going to have a master developer that is going to demolish the Ted and we're going to have one of the largest developments for middle-class people that the city has ever had," he said.
Remember that Turner Field is a conversion of the Olympic Stadium for the 1996 games, so at least by blowing it up or tearing it down Atlanta will avoid adding to the growing collection of Olympic ruin porn.
And, best case scenario, we get a stadium implosion. The Braves plan to move out for the 2017 season, so if Atlanta times things correctly, we might have the perfect 20th anniversary celebration of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium coming down.
And maybe, just maybe, the Braves will consider a new logo:
