The final game of the IPL regular season sees the Lucknow Super Giants host Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Ekana Stadium. The visitors have safely booked their place in the play-offs, but a victory over the Super Giants could go a long way towards ensuring they have a potentially easier path to next weekend’s IPL Final. Unfortunately for the Super Giants, a run of four consecutive defeats in the second half of the season derailed their play-off hopes, and despite a resounding 33-run win over the Gujarat Titans in their previous game, they have little to play for on Monday.
The two teams last met at the beginning of April, when a belligerent 81 from Quinton de Kock, plus a stunning spell of 3-14 from Mayank Yadav, helped LSG record a comfortable 28-run victory. Overall, the sides have played each other on five previous occasions, with RCB holding a narrow 3-2 advantage in the head-to-head.
Recent games at the Ekana Stadium have tended to be relatively low-scoring, and the average score for sides batting first this season is just 170. In their last game at the venue, LSG put an impressive 205 runs on the board, only to see the visiting Sunrisers knock off the total in just 18 overs. The weather forecast for Monday’s game is excellent, and with both sides packed full of dynamic top-order batters, this has the potential to be a high-scoring and hugely exciting contest.

Injuries to key bowlers have plagued LSG throughout their campaign. Pace bowlers Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav have missed significant chunks of the season, whilst fellow seamers Avesh Khan and Akash Deep have looked short of full fitness. As a result of those injuries, giant New Zealand star Will O’Rourke was drafted in as a replacement, but he has been unable to stop LSG conceding an alarming number of runs in recent outings.
LSG’s top order batters have performed consistently well throughout the season, with Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran all enjoying fine campaigns. Unfortunately for Lucknow, their middle order has been somewhat less impressive. Captain Rishabh Pant is averaging under 14, and with the likes of Abdul Samad and Ayush Badoni also struggling for consistency, LSG have seen several strong starts fail to turn into huge totals.
Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood is unlikely to be available until the play-offs, meaning that veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is expected to lead the RCB attack, with Yash Dahal and Lungi Ngidi providing the chief support. The spin department has been led by Krunal Pandya, with Liam Livingstone chipping in when required. However, given the fact that the Ekana Stadium wicket is likely to favor pace bowling, RCB may select Romario Shepherd instead of Livingstone in the middle order.
RCB will also have to reshuffle their batting order following the departure of England star Jacob Bethell. Big-hitting New Zealander Tim Seifert will take his place at the top of the order and will open alongside Virat Kohli. It has been yet another stellar IPL season for Kohli. He has racked up seven half-centuries and his average of 63.12 is one of the highest in the entire league. Lower down the order, Tim David and Devbutt Padikkal are also in fine form, helping to make RCB one of the most formidable batting lineups in the competition.
This should be a mouthwatering end to the IPL regular season. Both the Super Giants and the Royal Challengers have a host of world-class stars in their lineups, so we are expecting plenty of fireworks in Lucknow on Monday. Clearly, RCB have more at stake in the game, and a victory could be hugely important in their quest to claim a first ever IPL title. That being said, Lucknow will also want to finish the season on a high, especially in front of their home fans at the Ekana Stadium.
