This one could not be any closer. On paper, the 49ers are the stronger outfit, but both sit just outside of automatic seeding for the playoffs and will be gunning to claim those top spots. The 49ers have a dangerous defense and a well-balanced offense that utilizes the RPO well. This means that the Colts will need to remain true on defense, and they will almost certainly rely on Jonathan Taylor out of the backfield to wind down the clock and cover yards.
The linebackers vs. Taylor battle is the one that we are most interested in. The 49ers’ defense gives up a few yards and is fantastic in open space. Taylor is one of the most complete backs in the NFL, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. The winner of this battle could lead the outcome. However, do bear in mind that the Colts’ defense tends to struggle against run-heavy teams. With this, expect the R in RPO to be played more often by the Niners.
