Borussia Dortmund Fans Are Fed Up
Borussia Dortmund's fans have finally reached their breaking point. Just 21 months ago they were watching their team barely lose in the Champions League Finals, and they haven't seen them finish worse than second in the Bundesliga since the 2009-10 season. This season Dortmund aren't merely struggling, but are in danger of being relegated as they sit in 18th place out of 18 teams with the season half over. Despite still being coached by Jurgen Klopp and having world class players like Marco Reus, Mats Hummels, and Neven Subotić, they've only won four of 19 Bundesliga contests.
Today brought more misery, as Dortmund lost to Augsburg—who were only promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2011—at home 1-0, even though they had a man advantage for the final 25 minutes of the match. Afterwards the fans were pissed, and while the ultras didn't demand their jerseys—the fence probably would have prevented that anyways—they did demand to have their grievances heard.
What resulted is the fascinating video above. That is goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and defender Mats Hummels, Dortmund's vice-captain and captain respectively, going over to talk to the fans, whose anger and hurt are palpable. All the while the rest of the team look on, and Jurgen Klopp especially looks like he just got run over by a bus.
Fandom is beautiful and crazy and stupid and weird and sad.
