Late-stage capitalism has made the Super Bowl too expensive even for the millionaires
source: Getty Images Unfettered capitalism is putting some restraints on the top one percent enjoying one of its biggest parties of the year. With the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, luxury suites have reached the highest of high-roller prices. These seven-figure suites are out of the price range for even some of the biggest stars who are actually playing in the game.
Olivia Culpo wanted to treat fiance Christian McCaffrey’s mom to a suite for her birthday. Lisa McCaffrey said on her podcast that booking one would be too expensive. Culpo, the 2012 Ms. Universe Pageant winner, posted on Instagram that she wanted to gift Mrs. McCaffrey a suite for her birthday. Christian said during Super Bowl Opening Night that he shut that down.
Donna — more affectionately known as Mama — Kelce plans to be watching the game in the stands. Unlike Mama McCaffrey, she has the plug of all plugs in that her youngest son is dating the winner of the most Album of the Year awards in the history of the Grammys. Kelce told CNN the family won’t officially know if Taylor Swift will be there until the day of the game. Since there is no Kelce family suite due to high prices, Swift will likely be watching the game in one of the many that would love to host her
There are nearly 150 suites at Allegiant Stadium. They are reportedly selling for $1.4 to $2.5 million each. For those willing to pay mansion prices for studio-apartment sized exclusive access to Super Bowl, the amenities are delicious. There will be wagyu hot dogs, surf and turf nachos with filet mignon and lobster, King Crab fried rice, and more. Personally, for the price of the suite, forget sprinkling the beef into these ornate dishes, I say give everybody a tomahawk steak and a stone crab.
In a world in which people are struggling to afford housing, I do understand how this type of money being thrown around for a single night can be seen as insulting. Every unhoused person in Las Vegas could be housed for a price that won’t come close to all the money spent at Allegiant Stadium starting in the parking lot.
However, the money thrown around in Las Vegas on a regular weekend could do the same. On the scale of investments, blackjack and roulette tables are at one end and treasury bonds are on the other. Las Vegas is a place devoted to excess. Those giant liquor slushy drinks that cost $25 are not served in the majority of American bars.
If there is one place that income inequality will not be solved it is at the NFL’s biggest party, held in the American city where people most commonly go to blow money as a celebration. The league and the city should drain as much money from the people and companies who traveled there as possible.
One place where capitalism should be allowed to run wild is luxury accommodations at the Super Bowl. If you think you’re a big balla, shot calla, got 20 inch blades on your Impala, prove it. Conclude a weekend in Vegas with a $2 million luxury suite and all the fixin’s.
That’s what freedom is all about right? After a year of inflation kicking the behinds of average Americans, companies drop seven figures on five-six hours in a luxury suite like it’s nothing. If they can do it, then they should get drained for every last cent.
