U.S. Olympic Committee Selects Boston To Bid For The 2024 Olympics
The U.S. Olympic Committee announced Thursday that it had selected Boston to represent the United States in bidding for the 2024 Olympics. Boston's bid beat out those from Washington, San Francisco/Bay Area, and Los Angeles. Boston still has a long way to go, of course, before it can actually be chosen to host the Olympics. So far Rome is the only city that has officially submitted an application—they aren't due for another eight months—and the winner won't be chosen until Sept. 2017. To learn more about the bids the four cities submitted to the USOC, Gizmodo had a nice summary earlier this month.
While Boston will be celebrating tonight, and you will surely hear a lot of hot air about how hosting the Olympics would modernize the city and be a financial windfall, remember that nobody wants to host the 2022 Olympics and that virtually all credible research suggests that hosting the Olympics actually costs host cities lots of money.
