Four-Star Wide Receiver Recruit Chooses Soccer Over Football
Drake Davis, a junior at Virginia's Fork Union, had the opportunity to be the next Julio Jones or Reggie Wayne at one of the several big-time college football programs that offered him a scholarship. Instead, he's decided to quit football and focus on soccer in hopes of maybe being the next Jozy Altidore.
At 6'4", 215, and with an athletic ability that had 247Sports describing him as a "freak," most will choose to look at this as an opportunity to see what it looks like when America's best athletes pick soccer over the traditional American sports. But let's not lose sight of what's important here by putting on unnecessary expectations on a kid whose soccer history and talent are at this point complete unknowns. What will be most interesting going forward isn't how this one player turns out, but how many American athletes like him elect to play soccer in the future.
Still, we are rooting for the kid. At a minimum, maybe he can follow the tradition of first-name-only soccer stars and battle the other Drake for naming supremacy.
