"He's A Greedy Fucking Pig": Listen To Eric Murdock Rant On Mike Rice
On June 29, 2012, his next-to-last day at Rutgers, Scarlet Knights assistant Eric Murdock stormed into the athletic department and unleashed a profane, frustrated, 11-minute rant against head coach Mike Rice. Rice remained in his office with the door shut.
Murdock would later claim he was let go because he threatened to blow the whistle on Rice's verbal and physical abuse of players. When Murdock released the video, Rice was suspended, soon fired, Murdock filed a wrongful-termination lawsuit, and Rutgers quickly took its place as the most dysfunctional program of 2013.
The recording of this June meltdown, obtained by the , shows just how untenable their relationship had become: Murdock, speaking to associate coach David Cox, compares Rice to a slave driver, accuses him of pocketing ticket sales revenue, and claims the assistants are too afraid of him to say something. What the tape doesn't contain is as interesting: Murdock never references being fired for threatening to speak out against Rice's abuse. Instead he says he was being let go because he disobeyed Rice and left a Rutgers-run basketball camp in order to speak at his son's high school camp.
Some audio clips, via the Chronicle. Murdock questions Rice's abilities, and says he treats his players like slaves:
