Key Points
  • DraftKings, FanDuel fuel record Arkansas betting growth
  • Strict regulations have limited market expansion in Arkansas
  • More competition could reduce offshore betting risks

DraftKings and FanDuel’s entry into Arkansas’ online sports betting market has produced immediate results. Alongside BetSaracen, the state’s three mobile operators generated a combined $86.6 million in wagers during March, representing a 40% year-over-year increase, setting a new monthly record. Notably, DraftKings and FanDuel contributed more than 60% of the total handle, despite being live for only the final 12 days of the reporting period.

Arkansas sports betting growth has been limited

Arkansas’ legal sports betting has been in place for several years, but its expansion has been restrained by the state’s regulatory model.

Under current rules, mobile operators must share a significant portion of their revenue, at least 51%, with their casino partners that hold the licenses. This is in addition to paying state taxes that range from 13% to 20%, leaving limited profitability for operators.

As a result, Arkansas has trailed other U.S. markets in overall performance, ranking at the bottom of the list in the country.

Strong market debut could prompt regulatory changes in Arkansas

The early success of DraftKings and FanDuel may increase pressure on Arkansas regulators to revisit the state’s current sports betting framework. Their rapid impact in driving a significant share of record-breaking handle in a limited timeframe demonstrates the potential upside of a more competitive and accessible market.

If sustained, this momentum could encourage policymakers to consider adjustments aimed at improving operator margins and enhancing competition. This would bring Arkansas more in line with higher-performing markets across the country.

Why a competitive sports betting market matters

A competitive sports betting environment plays a critical role in keeping players within regulated platforms. When users are limited to only a small selection of sportsbooks, they may seek alternatives outside the legal market, including offshore sportsbooks that operate beyond state oversight.

This shift can have two major consequences. First, it redirects potential tax revenue away from the state, reducing the economic benefits that legalized betting provides. On top of that, it exposes bettors to increased risks, as offshore platforms lack consumer protections. This includes responsible gambling tools and the need to meet compliance standards.

Expanding competition within Arkansas’ legal framework could help address these concerns by offering a diverse selection for sports bettors, which would encourage them to stay within licensed and regulated operators.

If FanDuel and DraftKings can continue to have success in the Arkansas market, we could eventually see some changes to bring in more sportsbooks. This would benefit all parties involved.
