Connor McDavid is a three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, an award given to the NHL’s regular season MVP. The center for the Edmonton Oilers also serves as a BetMGM brand ambassador, and his role includes appearing in a new responsible gaming TV commercial alongside former NHL player and actor Terry Ryan.
The “Mullett Over” commercial promotes responsible play by reminding customers about BetMGM’s in-app responsible gaming tools and resources. It incorporates a lighthearted take on a hockey-themed hairstyle.
Besides giving players the ability to set time and spending limits, BetMGM’s GameSense is an industry-leading program that provides player education. The program is integrated across the mobile and desktop platforms, as well as MGM Resorts properties across the U.S. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation created it.
GameSense also promotes positive, transparent, and proactive engagement around responsible play. The messaging has appeared at 10 NFL stadiums this season.
Richard Taylor, BetMGM’s Director of Responsible Gambling, said the new campaign builds upon the company’s approach to deliver an entertaining and memorable RG message.
“We’re committed to finding new and creative ways to reach customers and encourage them to ‘mull it over’ before they place a bet,” Taylor said.
McDavid has represented BetMGM as a brand ambassador since 2022. He made his NHL debut in 2016 and became the NHL’s youngest-ever captain at age 19. He wasted little time putting his talents on full display, as McDavid took home the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer to go along with league MVP and outstanding player honors.
McDavid is still one of the league’s top scorers, ranking No. 2 with 52 points. The BetMGM Sportsbook app includes several McDavid props bets on days his Oilers are playing.
McDavid said filming the commercial with Ryan was a fun opportunity to combine hockey humor with a meaningful message.
“It’s important to stay in control, and BetMGM’s tools and resources help customers do just that,” McDavid said.
BetMGM Sportsbook is now live in Missouri, making it 30 markets where the operator has a mobile or retail presence. The company offers Missouri sports bettors a choice of options as a BetMGM land-based sportsbook is now open at Century Casino & Hotel Cape Girardeau. It means BetMGM’s RG messaging now applies to new customers getting that first taste of legal sports betting.
First-time users will find an entire responsible gaming section that can be accessed by clicking “account,” which is located in the bottom right corner. It includes a whole intro section that includes seven RG principles, one of which is how “gambling should be a fun activity and enjoyed as a form of entertainment.”
The very detailed RG section also includes information about self-exclusion, state resources, and the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline.
