Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is under investigation by both a state gaming regulator and the NCAA over allegations tied to sports betting activity during his time at Indiana. The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has launched a probe into claims that Sorsby wagered on his own team in 2022 while playing for Indiana. This comes after Sorsby recently checked into a residential treatment center for problem gambling.
Sorsby began his NCAA career at Indiana before transferring to Cincinnati following the 2023 season, where he spent two years with the Bearcats program. Since he played in Ohio, that’s why the OCCC is investigating him.
Earlier this year, Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech ahead of the 2026 season, which was initially expected to be his final season of NCAA eligibility and a key year for his NFL Draft prospects.
Now, with this gambling investigation, Sorsby’s football career is in jeopardy.
Sorsby’s future at Texas Tech remains uncertain as both the NCAA and state gaming regulators continue to examine allegations tied to sports betting activity. The investigations could result in disciplinary action affecting not only Sorsby, but potentially individuals or programs connected to the quarterback.
Under NCAA rules, student-athletes are prohibited from wagering on any NCAA sport, including professional competitions. Violations involving bets connected to a player’s own team can carry severe consequences, including permanent loss of eligibility.
Although reports indicate Sorsby did not participate in the games he allegedly wagered on during his time at Indiana, the allegations alone could still expose him to major NCAA penalties. The OCCC is reviewing whether any state gaming laws or sportsbook regulations were violated. Investigators are reportedly examining claims that Sorsby used a betting account registered under another person’s name, a practice commonly referred to as proxy betting.
