  • DraftKings faces pressure from unfavorable football betting results.
  • October margins followed a weaker September.
  • Upcoming results will show whether the slide continues.

The NFL season has brought higher betting activity back to U.S. sportsbooks, but the opening stretch has not produced equally favorable results for DraftKings. The operator is facing scrutiny over weaker sports betting margins following a run of NFL and college football outcomes that favored bettors more than bookmakers.

Susquehanna analysts flagged the trend after examining betting results from the fifth week of the NFL season and the sixth week of college football. Its model indicated sportsbook hold was unfavorable during the latest reporting period, creating another potential revenue obstacle for DraftKings and other major operators.

Football results put pressure on sportsbook hold

Sportsbook hold is the percentage of money wagered that an operator keeps after paying winning customers. That figure can swing substantially depending on game results, particularly during football season when betting interest becomes concentrated around a comparatively small number of heavily wagered games.

Susquehanna’s analysis covered the NFL schedule from Monday Night Football through Sunday Night Football, along with college football games played from Wednesday through Saturday. The firm found that recent results were unfavorable for bookmakers, contributing to weaker estimated sportsbook profitability during the week.

DraftKings enters October after a weak September

The concern is not limited to a single difficult weekend. Susquehanna’s model indicated October’s month-to-date hold had already moved into unfavorable territory following a September in which hold was also considered weak and declined from the same period last year.

That creates a rocky opening to the football calendar for DraftKings. NFL and college football generate significant betting activity during the fall, making the amount sportsbooks retain from those wagers particularly important. A large handle does not automatically translate into strong revenue if customers are winning enough bets to significantly reduce operator hold.

New York offers one useful measuring stick because of the size of its regulated mobile sports betting market. Statewide sportsbook handle reached approximately $573.4 million for the week ending Oct. 4 before rising to roughly $619.4 million for the week ending Oct. 11, according to state figures.

Those numbers show there was plenty of betting activity as the NFL season progressed. However, high wagering volume and strong sportsbook revenue are separate measures. Operators can take hundreds of millions of dollars in bets while producing comparatively disappointing revenue when popular wagers hit or game outcomes repeatedly break in customers’ favor.

Short-term results do not tell the full story

The early-season numbers are still a snapshot rather than proof of a wider DraftKings problem. Sports betting margins naturally move from week to week because operators cannot control which teams cover spreads, whether favorites win or how the most popular same-game parlays finish.

That volatility is why subsequent October results will matter. Another series of bettor-friendly NFL weekends could extend the margin pressure at an important time of year, while more favorable results could reverse the trend relatively quickly.

For DraftKings, the larger question is whether September and early October represent a temporary run of unfavorable outcomes or the beginning of a longer stretch of softer sportsbook performance. Upcoming state revenue reports and the company’s financial results should provide a clearer answer.
