FanDuel has canceled a planned event at the Philadelphia Zoo for VIP bettors and their families following concerns from gambling addiction experts and Pennsylvania regulators. The sportsbook had invited select customers to attend the zoo’s Halloween festivities on October 24, offering complimentary parking and other perks. The cancellation comes as FanDuel’s VIP program faces growing scrutiny.

FanDuel cancels family event after regulatory concerns

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, FanDuel invited VIP users to bring up to three family members to the zoo’s annual Boo at the Zoo celebration. The invitation included free parking, lunch, and snacks in a private area of the facility.

The involvement of children raised concerns among gambling addiction experts, who questioned whether family experiences should be used as rewards for gambling activity. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board also began looking into the arrangement after the Inquirer reported on the invitation.

FanDuel subsequently emailed customers to cancel the event, citing guidance from regulators.

Pennsylvania lawmaker wants to ban VIP programs

The controversy has also caught the attention of Pennsylvania lawmakers. State Rep. Tarik Khan questioned why a sportsbook would use a family attraction as a reward for gambling activity, especially when children were invited to participate.

In the Inquirer report, Rep. Khan stated that he plans to introduce legislation banning online gambling VIP programs and similar loyalty rewards. Such a proposal would go well beyond restricting family-oriented events, potentially affecting a common practice throughout the sports betting industry.

VIP programs typically offer selected customers benefits such as dedicated account managers and personalized rewards. The issue is that these incentives can encourage more gambling, particularly among customers who may already be experiencing financial difficulties.

FanDuel’s VIP practices already under scrutiny

The zoo cancellation comes amid broader questions about how FanDuel interacts with its VIP customers.

Earlier this month, Sen. Richard Blumenthal pressed FanDuel for answers about personalized celebrity videos sent to VIP bettors. The Connecticut senator requested information about the messages and whether those customers had displayed signs of problem gambling.

That inquiry followed controversy surrounding a personalized video featuring Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper. The message was sent to a FanDuel VIP customer who later alleged that sportsbooks encouraged excessive gambling despite substantial financial losses.

FanDuel has defended its VIP program, pointing to safeguards designed to identify potentially harmful gambling behavior. The operator says customers undergo screening before receiving VIP invitations and remain subject to responsible gambling monitoring.

The company has also emphasized that VIP account managers receive specialized training and are not compensated based on how much their customers wager or lose.

Philadelphia Zoo event would have questionable optics

With the Bryce Harper VIP video controversy as a backdrop, the event for VIP users at the Philadelphia Zoo would have had questionable optics. VIP programs, especially from FanDuel, are under scrutiny from regulators right now, so holding a family event at the zoo was problematic.

It remains to be seen what will happen to sportsbook VIP programs, but it’s clear that momentum is building for changes to be made.
