FanDuel has responded to complaints from daily fantasy sports (DFS) customers after a platform outage disrupted lineup management ahead of the first Sunday of the 2026 NFL season. The issue occurred during one of the busiest periods of the fantasy football calendar and left some users unable to modify entries before contests officially locked.
The company acknowledged the disruption on Sept. 14, calling the outage “unacceptable” and confirming that refunds had been issued to affected customers. The incident sparked widespread criticism across social media, with several DFS players arguing they were unable to submit finalized lineups before kickoff.
According to customer reports, technical issues affected FanDuel’s DFS platform for multiple hours before the start of Sunday’s early NFL games. During that time, some users said lineup changes were unavailable, preventing them from reacting to late-breaking injury news and inactive player announcements.
The timing created particular frustration because many fantasy football participants wait until shortly before kickoff to finalize rosters. Several users claimed they were left with incomplete lineups, placeholder selections, or “dummy” entries that could not be edited before contests locked.
Others said they were unable to enter contests altogether after experiencing difficulties accessing the platform. The outage reportedly continued until after lineup lock, removing any opportunity to make adjustments before games got underway.
FanDuel addressed the situation publicly on Monday, admitting the experience fell short of expectations during one of the most anticipated weekends on the NFL calendar.
In its statement, the company said it had investigated the issue and refunded net losses to customers impacted by the outage. FanDuel also stated that it remains committed to improving the DFS experience going forward.
The operator instructed customers who believe they were affected but have not yet received reimbursement to contact customer support. FanDuel has not publicly disclosed how many users were impacted or the total amount refunded.
The outage drew additional attention because DFS helped establish FanDuel as a major name in the U.S. gaming industry before the company expanded into online sports betting and casino products. As a result, technical issues affecting fantasy contests can generate significant scrutiny among long-time customers.
Much of the public response unfolded on social media, where users shared screenshots and firsthand accounts of problems experienced on Sunday morning.
Some customers criticized the lack of functionality during a key pregame period, while others expressed disappointment that they were unable to make lineup changes despite reserving contest entries ahead of time. A number of users questioned whether broader compensation would be offered beyond the refunds already announced.
The incident also renewed discussion about the importance of platform reliability during major sporting events. NFL Sundays are traditionally among the highest-traffic periods for DFS operators, with player news, roster adjustments, and contest registrations often peaking shortly before kickoff.
While FanDuel says impacted customers have received refunds for net losses, the company will likely continue addressing customer concerns as players prepare for Week 2. The outage serves as a reminder of how technical disruptions can affect fantasy sports participation during high-demand events.
