FanDuel’s Real-Time Check-In was recently announced at SBC Americas in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on May 14, 2025. The annual conference showcased some of the latest developments within the industry.
Real-Time Check-In is a new responsible gaming (RG) tool that helps keep an eye on each user’s deposit habits as a way to ensure player safety. The hope is that this tool will help players check their spending at FanDuel.
FanDuel’s Real-Time Check-In is powered by machine learning to keep track of deposit amounts and length of gaming sessions. When a player makes a deposit that does not match their usual pattern, they will get a notification to lower the amount or set new limits. The goal here is to keep each player in check.
At SBC Americas, Cory Fox, senior vice president of public policy and sustainability at FanDuel stated how Real-Time Check-In will get users to “reflect on how much they’re depositing and if it’s within their budget.”
For example, let’s say that after playing through the FanDuel bonus, a player usually deposits $20 per month, but then decides to put $100 into their account. FanDuel’s Real-Time Check-In would then prompt that user to reduce the deposit or change their limits. This adds another layer of protection for players.
During the 2024 NFL season, FanDuel released a responsible gaming tool known as MySpend. This feature helped users get a detailed breakdown of their betting results. It includes wins/losses and the amount deposited.
This was well received, as approximately 3.5 million FanDuel players used MySpend to keep track of their sports betting. “We want our customers to know what they are spending and to ensure they are within their comfort zone,” said Jill Watkins, senior commercial director of responsible gaming at FanDuel.
Now with Real-Time Check-In, FanDuel has added another tool to its portfolio, which allows players to:
With FanDuel unveiling Real-Time Check-In to go along with MySpend, we’re seeing operators using machine learning to help with responsible gaming and maintain a safer environment for each of their players.
Sites like FanDuel can use AI tools to monitor player behavior and provide personalized intervention by catering to the needs of each user. For example, if a player was showing a significant increase in time spent on the site, AI support could prompt them to create limits on gaming sessions.
There could be an AI assistant for each user, offering customer support whenever needed. Features like this can help continue to improve the sports betting experience.
We have seen other sportsbooks like DraftKings release new responsible gaming tools, such as My Stat Sheet in March 2024, which helps players track their betting results.
Below is a list of other responsible gaming tools that use machine learning to help with player safety. These are tools that have already been implemented by European sportsbooks.
| Responsible Gaming Tool | How It Works |
|---|---|
| GameScanner (Mindway AI) | Uses neuroscience and machine learning to detect problem gambling with the goal of early intervention. |
| Gamalyze (Mindway AI) | Self-assessment tool for problem gambling presented in the form of a game to keep users engaged. |
| OptiGenie (Optimove) | Looks at user behavior to find early signs of issues with sports betting. |
Similar to DraftKing’s My Stat Sheet and other European initiatives to protect players, FanDuel’s Real-Time Check-In tool reflects increased efforts towards promoting responsible gaming measures through modern AI technology.
