Indiana regulators have opted against making an immediate decision on whether to prohibit collegiate player prop wagers, pushing the discussion into the fall and leaving the betting markets available for the start of the 2026 college football season.
During a recent Indiana Gaming Commission (IGC) meeting, commissioners chose to delay action on a potential ban until Sept. 24, citing the need for additional research and evaluation. The postponement means bettors in the state will still be able to access college player prop markets through regulated sportsbooks when the upcoming football season begins.
The issue has become increasingly prominent across the U.S. sports betting industry as regulators, lawmakers, sportsbooks, and collegiate athletics stakeholders continue to debate the risks and benefits associated with player-specific wagers.
The NCAA once again used the Indiana discussion to advocate for restrictions on college player prop betting. According to NCAA representatives, wagers tied to individual athlete performances can create additional pressure on student-athletes and potentially expose them to harassment from bettors frustrated by results.
The organization also argues that player-specific markets may increase integrity risks because individual performances can be easier to influence than game outcomes. NCAA officials pointed to continuing concerns about match manipulation and athlete welfare as reasons more jurisdictions should move toward banning these betting options.
The debate comes amid heightened industry scrutiny following reports involving former Indiana quarterback Brendan Sorsby and wagering activity connected to Indiana football while he was on the roster. NCAA officials referenced the broader betting-related controversy during their presentation to commissioners.
Indiana is not alone in considering restrictions. NCAA officials told regulators that 19 U.S. jurisdictions with legal sports betting have already implemented some form of college player prop betting ban.
While the NCAA has continued pressing for restrictions, industry representatives pushed back during the meeting, arguing that prohibiting legal sportsbooks from offering college player props may not solve the underlying concerns.
Representatives speaking on behalf of the Sports Betting Alliance said harassment and integrity issues would likely continue even if regulated operators were forced to remove the markets. Instead, they argued that wagers could shift toward unregulated or offshore alternatives that provide less transparency for regulators and sporting bodies.
Industry stakeholders also maintained that licensed sportsbooks provide valuable data that can help identify suspicious betting activity and potential integrity concerns. From their perspective, keeping betting activity within regulated channels offers greater visibility than driving it elsewhere.
The debate has also expanded beyond traditional sportsbooks. Industry representatives noted that prediction markets could play a larger role in offering college-related event contracts, potentially complicating efforts by states that choose to restrict certain wagering products.
For now, Indiana regulators appear focused on gathering more information before deciding whether a rule change is warranted. The delayed timeline gives commissioners several months to consider the NCAA’s concerns alongside arguments from sportsbook operators and industry groups.
The September meeting could ultimately determine whether Indiana joins the growing number of jurisdictions that restrict collegiate player prop betting.
