Key Points
  • June handle reached a monthly record
  • Fiscal year wagers topped $6.9 billion
  • Mobile betting remained market leader

Maryland’s regulated sports betting market posted its strongest June on record in 2026, continuing a trend of sustained growth across the state. According to data released by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, bettors wagered more than $523 million during the month, establishing a new June benchmark for the market.

The record month also helped conclude a notable fiscal year for Maryland sports betting. While June’s betting volume set a new monthly mark for the period, the figure remained slightly below May 2026’s total, which continues to stand as the state’s highest overall monthly handle.

Annual wagering and state revenue continue climbing

For fiscal year 2026, Maryland sportsbooks accepted $6.91 billion in wagers, representing an 11.1% increase from the $6.22 billion recorded during fiscal year 2025. The increase highlights the continued expansion of the state’s regulated sports wagering industry several years after legalization.

State contributions also rose significantly. Maryland generated approximately $132.3 million in sports betting contributions during fiscal year 2026, up 48.8% from the previous year’s $88.9 million. The increase reflects not only higher wagering activity but also changes to the state’s tax structure and revenue collection framework.

Most of the money generated through sports betting supports the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, a program dedicated to public education initiatives. Additional funding is directed to the state’s General Fund and the Maryland Problem Gambling Fund.

Mobile betting remains the dominant channel

Online sportsbooks continued to account for nearly all betting activity in Maryland. Of the $523.3 million wagered during June, approximately $515.4 million came through digital platforms, while retail sportsbooks handled about $8 million in bets.

The figures underscore the importance of mobile wagering in the state’s betting ecosystem. Consumer preference for app-based betting has been a major factor behind Maryland’s continued market growth, mirroring broader trends seen across legal sports betting jurisdictions in the United States.

Mobile betting’s accessibility has helped operators reach a larger audience, while retail sportsbooks now represent only a small share of total wagering activity. As a result, future market growth will likely remain closely tied to online betting performance and user adoption rates.

Strong betting volume did not translate to higher June tax collections

Despite the record handle, June’s tax collections were lower than the same month a year earlier. Sportsbooks reported $38.2 million in taxable win, generating roughly $7.62 million in state contributions during the month.

The decline was largely tied to sportsbook hold percentage rather than a lack of betting activity. Operators retained 10.4% of wagers in June 2026 compared with 14.1% during June 2025. Because tax revenue is based on sportsbook revenue rather than total wagers placed, a lower hold rate can reduce tax collections even when bettors are wagering more money overall.

Market evolution continues in Maryland

Maryland’s sports betting market has continued to evolve since the launch of mobile wagering. In 2025, lawmakers increased the tax rate on mobile sportsbook operators from 15% to 20%, a change that contributed to larger state contributions during fiscal year 2026.

While monthly revenue results can fluctuate due to sportsbook performance and hold percentages, the latest figures suggest that wagering activity remains strong. With mobile betting accounting for the overwhelming majority of market volume and annual handle continuing to rise, Maryland enters the new fiscal year from a position of sustained growth rather than short-term momentum.
