An investigation recently released by the NCAA detailed how a suspected gambling operation, now facing federal charges, allegedly posed as NIL representatives to contact players. Their goal was to influence a 2024 men’s basketball game involving Fordham Rams.
Former Fordham Rams players Elijah Gray and Will Richardson were accused of interacting with individuals tied to sports betting, along with a former NBA player, in connection with a February 23, 2024 game against Duquesne. Investigators allege the two players discussed intentionally influencing the outcome in exchange for payments ranging from $10,000 to $15,000.
Reports indicate that Gray acknowledged to investigators that he initially agreed to the plan but later backed away, stating he ultimately competed as normal in Fordham’s victory. However, he admitted to sharing information with a known bettor, which the NCAA determined violated ethical conduct standards.
Gray was later named among dozens of individuals charged in a federal gambling case connected to the game and has since entered a guilty plea, with sentencing still pending.
Richardson, meanwhile, was found to have obstructed the investigation by providing misleading information and failing to cooperate fully, according to the NCAA.
The investigation also revealed that bettors allegedly contacted players while posing as NIL representatives. Gray told enforcement staff he was approached via Instagram ahead of the Duquesne matchup and was encouraged not only to underperform but also to involve teammates.
Authorities have also charged former NBA player Antonio Blakeney in connection with the broader scheme.
The situation comes as Brendan Sorsby, a quarterback for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, has stepped away from the program to seek help for a gambling addiction.
Sorsby’s decision follows reports that he placed thousands of wagers across multiple sports through a betting app, which has prompted an investigation by the NCAA.
While there has been no indication that Sorby attempted to influence the result of the game, NCAA rules strictly prohibit athletes from betting on sports, leaving his future eligibility in question.
Recent developments involving NCAA investigations highlight how the rapid expansion of sports betting is creating new vulnerabilities around game integrity in college sports.
