  • NCAA may lift ban on student-athlete pro sports betting by June
  • Policy would allow regulated pro sports bets
  • NCAA plans “safe harbor” for gambling issues

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) may soon let student-athletes, coaches, and staff bet on pro sports. Rules currently ban betting on sports like football, basketball, baseball, and golf to keep games fair. In April, the NCAA’s Division I Board voted 21-1 to consider ending this ban for pro sports. A final decision is set for late June.

This change could reshape how the NCAA handles gambling, aiming to balance fairness with the realities of modern sports betting. The organization wants to focus on protecting college sports while allowing bets on pro leagues like the NFL and NBA.

The current impact of student-athlete betting

Sports betting is legal in 39 states, which makes enforcing NCAA rules tough. Small bets on pro sports by athletes often lead to minor penalties, overwhelming compliance teams.

Betting penalties today depend on wager size. For pro sports bets, athletes lose 10% of their season for up to $500, 20% for $501-$800, or 30% for over $800. Betting on their own team can end their career forever.

Compliance teams spend too much time on small issues of pro sports betting instead of bigger threats related to college sports betting. For instance, in 2023, Iowa and Iowa State faced betting scandals where athletes wagered on college sports, which raised concerns about game fairness and athlete behavior.

These cases show why the NCAA wants strict rules for college bets but looser ones for pro sports. This shift would help the NCAA use its resources better and keep college games honest.

A push to protect college athletes by banning prop bets

The NCAA believes that athletes betting on pro sports does not hurt college games. Instead, Charlie Baker, NCAA President, wants states to ban prop bets on college athletes. Ohio, Vermont, and Maryland already ban these bets, and Baker urges other states to follow.

Similarly, Matt Banker, a sports consultant, said the NCAA should focus on risks like point-shaving or prop bets in college sports, not pro bets. These bets, which focus on individual performances, often lead to harassment of players. Fans sometimes pressure athletes to perform for betting wins, creating stress.

The clear concern is that prop bets on college athletes can lead to unfair and unsafe games. Meeting in the middle to allow pro sports betting would help protect college athletes and let the NCAA target bigger problems.

Protecting athletes through safe gambling education

The NCAA also wants to support athletes with gambling issues. It may create “safe harbor” rules, offering lighter penalties for those who seek help.

A 2023 survey found 58% of young adults bet on sports, showing how common it is. The NCAA hopes to educate athletes about gambling risks instead of just punishing them through its “Draw The Line” initiative. Educational initiatives could help athletes make smarter choices.

American sports betting continues to evolve

Since a 2018 court ruling allowed legal sports betting, Americans bet $150 billion in 2024. The NCAA partners with Genius Sports to provide betting data, showing it accepts legal betting but wants to shield college sports. It is also probing game-fixing in men’s basketball to ensure fairness. These efforts aim to balance legal betting with athlete safety.

The NCAA’s Division I Council will decide on the rule change soon. Athletes could potentially legally bet on pro sports by the 2025 football season in states where it’s allowed. If approved in June, it would mark a big shift from the NCAA’s current strict no-betting policy, while also reflecting the growing acceptance of sports betting in the U.S.
