A wide-ranging investigation into suspicious sports betting tied to Fresno State men’s basketball has led to an arrest in Nevada, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn scrutiny from both regulators and collegiate authorities. The inquiry stems from unusual wagering patterns linked to games during the 2024–25 college basketball season, prompting deeper analysis by sportsbooks and regulators.
The situation first came to light when a Nevada sportsbook flagged irregular betting activity and alerted authorities, a standard safeguard in regulated betting markets designed to detect anomalies. From there, the Nevada Gaming Control Board launched a formal probe, coordinating with other entities to determine whether rules or laws had been violated.
Investigators allege that the scheme centered on the use of insider knowledge to place prop bets, specifically wagers tied to individual player performance. According to findings, individuals involved may have been aware in advance that a player would underperform, allowing them to place more informed and potentially profitable bets.
Such activity raises significant integrity concerns, as prop betting markets are particularly vulnerable to manipulation due to their reliance on individual statistics rather than overall game outcomes. Authorities indicated that the alleged misconduct involved deliberate actions to influence performance, making the case more complex than standard betting violations.
Elements of the case had surfaced earlier through an NCAA investigation into betting violations among players. In September, the NCAA sanctioned former athletes Mykell Robinson, Steven Vasquez, and Jalen Weaver, concluding that they had placed wagers on games involving their own teams.
The NCAA also found that sensitive team information had been shared externally, contributing to suspicious betting activity. In some instances, authorities believe that gameplay itself may have been influenced to align with betting outcomes, reinforcing concerns about the broader scope of the issue.
Nevada investigators ultimately gathered evidence through subpoenas, financial and phone records, and sportsbook data, establishing probable cause for criminal activity. The evidence focused in part on wagers placed during a January 7, 2025 game, where coordinated betting activity was allegedly detected.
One suspect was arrested on May 5 and booked into Clark County Detention Center. The individual faces multiple charges, including fraud, conspiracy to cheat at gambling, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect and note that the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials have stated that further arrests and charges are possible as the case develops. Regulators have chosen to limit additional disclosures to avoid interfering with active investigative efforts, suggesting that the scope may extend beyond the initial arrest.
